Cocoon Emergency Shelter (Images courtesy John Moriarty)By Andrew Liszewski

Even though we may enjoy the occasional camping trip to the great outdoors a good portion of mankind has little to no survival skills in the event they get lost in the woods. That’s probably why just staying in one spot if you do get lost is always the best solution. Not only does it make you easier to find but it ensures you don’t get into any more trouble.

The Cocoon by industrial designer John Moriarty is kind of like a life jacket for when you get lost. It’s easy to carry when not in use but in the event of an emergency it can be quickly unfolded and hung from a tree or even a cliff face providing you with a sheltered place to stay. Bright warm colors and fabrics on the inside help you stay warm by keeping your bodyheat in and any wind and wetness out. Just try and keep any thoughts about looking like a giant pinata for bears out of your mind.

  1. who would actually hang themselves from a cliff face? no matter how safe it is, im not sleeping in a sack hanging from the side of a cliff… i would however sleep inside that hanging from a tree… i can imagine it now, a tree full of giant blue sacks of people, now thats a future everyone can looks forward to

  2. That is pretty cool. There seems to be more and more trendy and high tech stuff for us outdoor enthusiasts coming out every year. If this one helps to make some people feel comfortable enough to get out into the woods or on the mountains then it is a great idea. Hopefully they won’t have to use it in an emergency but if they need it then at least it is with them.

For the climbers I think it is a great idea. Nice alternative to the hammock. I wonder how would it be on your back, though? Any feedback yet?

    Cheers,
    Robin

  3. But… what if there are no trees or cliffs? Do you just flop it on the tundra and curl up in a fetal position inside? Not so butterfly now, are you? ARE YOU?!

  5. Ummm… I dont find that comfortable. Its hard to sleep with your head in your knees and after awhile of sleeping like that wouldnt your needs cramp up.
