Zombie Belvedere To Rise From Grave On Friday

Time capsules are being buried all the time, but rarely do you hear of someone actually digging one up, much less one of the magnitude of what’s buried beneath a sidewalk in Tulsa. Back in 1957, a brand spankin’ new white and gold Plymouth Belvedere was entombed in a (supposedly) nuke-proof concrete vault along with some Tulsa town records and a stash of oil and gasoline (since in the future, oil and gas would surely be obsolete). The vault also contains a pack of gum, some cigarettes, a bottle of tranquilizers, and a case of Schlitz beer. It’s been nearly 50 years to the day, and the car is about to be quite literally unearthed. More info in the video:

When the car was buried, citizens of Tulsa were asked to guess the population of the city in 2007. Their guesses were recorded on microfilm (whatever that is), and whoever turns out to be closest gets the car. Now, 50 years is a long time… A $100 savings bond was also buried, and it would be worth around $1200 now had the bank it was drawn on not foreclosed several decades ago. The car was about $2000 brand new in 1957, and is estimated to be worth as much as 50 times that if it’s in good condition, but there’s the rub: although the car was buried in a concrete bunker and wrapped in plastic, some initial excavations this week revealed that the car might not be in great shape.
