RIP Joox.net (Image courtesy Tombstone Generator)
By Andrew Liszewski

While that goody two shoes Joost always chose to play by the rules its cousin Joox.net was a wild child that preferred to throw caution to the wind. And it’s for that reason we all fell in love with the site. (Well that and the hundreds of free streaming movies and TV shows.) Over the past few months Joox.net has occasionally gone down causing a bit of panic for those who’ve come to enjoy its services but the site always re-appeared a few days later. This time though it looks like Joox.net’s time has finally come. The following comment was posted to my original Joox.net story:

We had to officially shut down the site due to repeated warnings about theft and copy-right violations. Truth to be told, the managers, myself included, don’t really give a crap about any copy-right violations, but after someone threatened to sue, I felt I didn’t have a choice.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but you can visit stage6.com if the urge to stream high quality videos persists.

I’m thinking of starting a site myself, and the Anonymous post above has a point; stage6 do give out their links freely, and embedding isn’t actually against the law. So screw those people who are jealous of our success and worry about us violating their rights to the wallets of people like you.

Here’s to the memory of Joox. We had a good run.

It was a good run indeed. You will be sorely missed.

Update: So it looks like those 3 hours of Journalism classes I slept through really paid off. Joox.net appears to be back up and my report of its death were premature.

  1. No need to be too sad… I’m sure the creators of joox and others will come up with new sites that stream divx quality videos. I took a look at the new podnix.com website and even though it is a little disorganized, you may like what you find.

By the way, if you don’t have the money to buy the dvd’s of the TV shows or movies you watch on these sites then it’s not taking any money out of anyone’s hands. I know I wouldn’t go out there and buy a 70$ season of say, 24, to watch – i just can’t afford it. I don’t see why networks aren’t realizing this more and taking the opportunity to tailor commercial advertising to the profile of the viewer (as is possible over the web).

  2. Unfortunately my favorite, videohybrid.com probably has it’s days numbered as well. I’ll never forget going there and watching spidey 3 just 2 days after release into theaters. In DIVX quality no less!

They cut back to just new release movies until they unveil their supposed mega upgrade. Even at that, I loved it when I strolled over to watch the new Die Hard film.

I did warn them but alas when you’re dealing with teenagers (yes, it’s run by an all teen group) its best just to roll with it and enjoy.

  3. Andrew Liszewski, I would like to know who cited this information you have posted? The site is not gone and is down often lately due to massive server load, and is constantly being upgraded, and soon will be upgraded enough to handle more then enough server load. Next time, try contact people who know correct information within the Joox official irc chat @ irc.ashnet.org #joox , I am an op in the room and my alias is also ‘dying’, if you have any further questions please feel free to contact me in the room or either by email. Thank you.

  4. Well said dying. One would thing, when ‘quoting’ someone, that the information used in the quote would be real and accurate. This is a bunch of ficticious BS as those in the know really do know what’s going on. Joox.net will be back, and will remain the best source of divx arranged movies/media. kthnx bai

  6. In our mad pursuit of the scoop, we members of the press sometimes…make mistakes. “OhGizmo!” would like to make the following corrections.

    – Joox.net is not dead.
    – Styrofoam is not made from kittens
    – Lyndon Johnson did not provide the voice of Yosemite Sam
    – Roy Rogers was not buried inside his horse
    – Audrey Hepburn never weighed 400 pounds
    – Salt water does not chase the “thirsties” away
    – Cats do not eventually turn into dogs
    – Bullets do not bounce off of fat boys
    – Everything is 10% fruit juice
    – V8 juice is not 1/8 gasoline
    – Ted Koppel is a robot

  7. Joox.net is dead no if ands or buts, it’s dead.
    – Users can not post new links
    – Users can not comment on links
    – No way of contacting the mods/admins of the site
    – It has been taken over by Spamvertisers, linking their own sites
    – Repeted request to revive the “old Joox” has gone unanswered by admins
    – Shoot it, Joox.net is dead
