Vertebrae (Image courtesy Solent News & Photo Agency)By Andrew Liszewski

The Vertebrae was designed by Paul Hernon and it basically incorporates a toilet, a sink, a water cistern and two showers into an 8 foot tall compact steel column that can be folded up like a Swiss army knife when not in use. It was designed for those living in a small cramped apartment who might not have the room for a bathroom with all the amenities they would like.

And while I like the idea, I find it hard to believe that someone who could afford the Vertebrae’s $15,500+ price tag would be living in an apartment that lacked a bathroom big enough to accommodate what the column has to offer. And in addition to the price, the Vertebrae weighs over 330 pounds before you fill the internal pipes and the toilet with water, which means there’s a good chance you’d want to reinforce the floor before installing one. Not to mention the renovations needed to re-route water and drainage pipes to the middle of the room. So while it’s a clever design that’s surprisingly going into production next year, I’m not so sure that it’s the ideal solution for its target market.
