Years ago, Andy Rubin gave the world Android. Not content with how practical and slow moving Google could be (yes, that says more about Andy Rubin than it says about Google), he eventually left and founded Playground Global, a hybrid consulting firm/incubator that focuses on developing the technologies that will drive the world of tomorrow. And one of the many projects incubating there at the moment is the plan to develop a dashcam that will be given to the end user free of charge. Yes, a dashcam like the Russians are fond of having on their windshields, yours to keep, for $0. Of course… free never means free, and although you won’t have to spend any money on it, you will have to agree to have the camera send data back to HQ. Just what that data is, and what they plan to do with it isn’t clear at the moment (talks of AI, world mapping, Street-View competition, etc.), but Rubin is no idiot, and the company he founded to the tune of $350 million in funding is aware that they’ll have to alleviate privacy concerns if and when their project launches.
