Over the past few years Takara has been releasing ‘Masterpiece’ editions of some of the more popular Transformers in the toy line, including Optimus Prime, Megatron and Starscream. The figures are considerably larger and more expensive than the ones released in the 80’s, but the extra detail and articulation is enough to convince geeks like me who grew up with the toys to shell out the extra money now that we have disposable incomes. And while Optimus and Megatron are definitely near the top of the Tranformers’ popularity list, I’m pretty sure if Takara had let the public choose their favorite character to get the Masterpiece treatment, there’s no question that Grimlock would have been first on deck. I don’t care if you sided with the Autobots or the Decepticons as a kid, everyone loved Grimlock.
The MP-08 Masterpiece Grimlock will supposedly come with an LED in his arm to illuminate his energy sword, and is made from a combination of plastic and die-cast metal parts. He’s currently available for pre-order from BigBadToyStore.com (it’s really not that bad) for $143.99, even though he’s not scheduled to be released until March of 2009.

MP 08 Masterpiece Grimlock is probably one of the best Masterpiece toys I have ever had. He stands approximately about 8 to 10 inches tall. A shy taller than MP 03 Masterpiece Starscream. He is made from high grade plastic, a disappointment to me being he was originally slated to have mostly die-cast parts. Anyway, he transforms quite easily ( Resembles G1 transformation ), and has a lot of gimmicks which makes up for his short comings. He has a light up Energo and Plasma rifle action going on, quick switch eye color change in both dino and bot mode, last but not the least is the tail swing/head tilt action. Not to be forgotten is the tons of accessories that he has included. These are the Brain transfer device , waiter/server attire ( both as seen in the cartoons) and the Energo and Plasma rifle accessories.
