Solar Powered Mars Explorer Kit (Image courtesy EcoCentric)By Andrew Liszewski

Recently NASA has taken a simpler, cheaper approach to space exploration and with two rovers currently rolling around Mars it seems to be working. So if you have kids that dream about working at the Jet Propulsion Lab rather than playing in the NBA this is a good place to start.

Since it’s sold as a kit the Mars Explorer comes as a pile of parts but during the assembly process kids can learn important life lessons like how to assemble a gearbox, how to wire a solar panel and electric motor and most importantly how to call tech support when the final product doesn’t seem to work. Now something tells me there’s not enough Estes model rocket engines on the planet to actually get this mini Mars Explorer to the red planet but I’m sure the average kids bedroom will provide a more than adequate hostile environment for the rover to explore.

The mini Mars Explorer kit is available from EcoCentric for about $57.
