Hi guys. Just wanted to let y’all know that we’re back online after spending roughly 24h down due to a hacker attack.
Sometime in the morning of Tursday, January 19th, we got linked to on Digg.com. Aside from the wonderful 30,000 or so new visitors, we got something else: a hacker. Someone found a vulnerability on the site, and pretty much wiped us out for a day. I’m not saying the hacker came from the Digg community, as we get plenty of non-Digg traffic anyway.
We’re back thanks to the good work of the guys at Websavers. And to the wonders of backups.
Always backup.
Anyway, back on Monday.
David, I know exactly how you feel, TechEBlog spent the most part of Friday down because of excessive traffic/CPU usage. Just purchased a new server so hopefully it doesn’t happen again.
Sage advice. I have been involved in Disaster Recovery for almost every firm I have worked for in the past 15 years, and there is nothing that is more important than a secure backup. Oh, and while you are at it, take time to test your backup from time to time.
:>)
David, my site was in the same boat, it experienced 12+ hours of downtime yesterday. Just bought a new server so hopefully everything runs smoothly from here on out.
The Million Dollar Homepage just had some downtime from hackers a few days ago as well! Hope this isn’t a common occurence.
