While the Olympus FE-280 probably wouldn’t grab your attention while perusing your local camera shop, it does have one nifty trick up its sleeve that parents might appreciate. The camera includes a ‘Smile Shot’ scene mode which uses face detection technology to tell when your subject is smiling.

Once you’ve hit the shutter button the camera won’t take the photo until it detects the change in contrast caused by light teeth against the darker mouth. At least that’s how I think it’s done, I’m sure it’s considerably more complex than that. But if you’re trying to capture that rare photo of your kids in a good mood, the FE-280 might improve your chances. Other features include an 8.0 megapixel sensor, xD Picture Card slot, 3x optical zoom, a 2.5″ LCD display, super macro mode (as close as 5cm) and a top end ISO setting of 1600.

Besides the silver color pictured above the Olympus FE-280 is also available in black, red and blue for around $180, which is pretty reasonable.
