This is one of those “that’s… good to know” odd posts. The Olympic torch design has always been conservative, meaning somone can identify it as a torch at first sight. That has been changing in the last 25 years: The Torch is becoming more moderny.
Here we have the torch designed for the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic. The torch design is fascinating allright, but I found the technical requirements for the torch more exciting.
“It (the flame) cannot be re-lit and it must never go out, not even in rain, snow, or in winds up to 120 km/h. The flame of each torch, which burns for 15 minutes, must not be higher than 10 centimetres.”
Also, look at the pictures of people holding the torch: most of them look like they are ready to beat someone with it.

Ok perhaps it’s because I didn’t have my Wheaties this morning, but that doesn’t make sense. The flame cannot be re-lit and it must never go out — yet it only burns for 15 mins? Eh?
Yea I found that odd too. But that’s what the Olympic site said (http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/torino/open_torch_uk.asp). Maybe it burns for 15 mins for the media people to film it. I tried it at home, and it is pretty hard to run with around a lit up torch.
