While unfortunately this product is still in the MIT research-project portion of its life, the concept still holds a lot of promise. The goal of the research is to integrate computing into traditional culinary utensils in order to provide feedback to the user on how to improve the food being prepared.

The Intelligent Spoon is equipped with sensors that measure temperature, acidity, salinity and viscosity. The spoon is connected to a computer and as the sensors evaluate the different properties of the food being stirred, the computer processes the data. The information obtained from the spoon can then be used to advise the cook on what to do next. For example add more salt to the mixture or continue stirring for 5 more minutes until the batter is thicker. For those of us completely inept at cooking this may give us a chance to finally take down those Iron Chefs!

  1. sounds like a cool idea, though they would have to reduce it so that all the information is displayed in the handle, and it would have to be smart enough to know what you are trying to do. Some sort of intuitive user interface for the settings.

Also, I have that same glass pot. Though it’s not really glass, and they don’t make them anymore because if you heat it up super high in the oven it explodes. It’s really a shame though, i love that thing. It’s great for cooking rice because you can see when there is no more water without opening it up. you can even get a little crust going on the bottom without burning the rice, which i love.

  2. Experienced cooks don’t need this, and newbies will use it as a crutch which will prevent them from learning how to cook well.

Plus it’s probably going to be three or four times more expensive than a plain old spoon.

  3. I totally agree with you on this, I don't think an experienced would ever be interested in this thing, for the matter of fact even I would never require it at all, so you could consider me a good cook.
