Escher Waterfall Sculpture (Images courtesy ThinkGeek)
By Andrew Liszewski

Maybe someday when we unlock the secrets of space, time and other dimensions M.C. Escher will actually be remembered as a great architect and not just a great artist. But thanks to our current limited understanding of the universe it’s pretty much impossible for us to turn any of Escher’s more intriguing 2D designs into 3D models. But that hasn’t stopped us from trying.

At first glance this sculpture of Escher’s famous Waterfall drawing looks like someone has done the impossible but when you see it from a different angle you realize it’s actually just a clever illusion. In fact in order to trick your mind that this could actually exist you have to look at the sculpture from a specific angle and cover one eye so you’re not seeing it with binocular vision. It seems like a lot of effort when the 2D version gets the idea across so much easier.

The Waterfall sculpture is available from ThinkGeek for $59.99 and is actually limited to only 500 pieces so if you’re interested you might not want to wait.
