Aquariums can be tedious and hard to take care of. But the JrPonics set, pictured above, is designed for kids. That means it’s so simple to maintain, well, even a kid can do it. And he’ll learn all about hydroponics in the process. See, the JrPonics kit combines a little herb garden that sits atop a fish-living compartment. The plants grow and eventually feed off the fish’s, uh, excrement (not exclusively, however) while simultaneously oxygenating the water. Your child will witness a symbiotic relationship that could spark interest in a host of educational and intellectually motivating topics.

The JrPonics kit comes with the following:

Air Pump, Tubing and Air Stone Gravel Mix Net Cups, Grow Stones and Foam Pucks Basil & Mint Seeds FritzZyme® Nitrifying Bacteria Nitrozime® Seaweed Extract General Hydroponics® FloraDuo® A & B Hydroponics Nutrients Betta Bites® Fish Food 1oz Foliar Spray Bottle 30-page Full Color Instruction Manual.

For $65, this can make a great Christmas gift for anyone looking to steer their kids away from the mind-numbing presents most people are likely to get this Holiday season.

  1. The plants do not oxygenate the water the air pump does. In a normal aquaponics system the water is pumped up to the grow medium. It filters through the medium cleaning the water that runs back down to the storage tank. You still need a air pump to oxygenate the water.
