ICW Portuguese Squelette Minute Repeater Watches

A trend in watches is shaping up. Bigger is better. It seems. Maybe for that reason, the Portuguese watches have popped up on my radar. They are not however, by any means, new.

Let me tell you about them.

In 1936, two Portuguese merchants, Rodrigues and Texeira, visited International Watch Co, (IWC) in Schaffhausen, Switzerland where they made some unusual orders. Contrary to the custom of the time, which called for small watches, the two men wanted a larger sized wristwatch that would have the specifications of a marine chronometer: perfect readability and high precision. The ‘Portuguese’ was thus born.

What is new, is that at the 2004 SIHH, IWC presented three superb new Portuguese that are now on sale in the marketplace: the Portuguese Automatic, the Portuguese Mystery Tourbillon and the Portuguese Squelette Minute Repeater. Here I present you with pictures of the sumptuous Minute Repeater Squelette. Only 50 have been made… and I’m too scared to hunt around for a price.

Instead, go inside for a bunch of fairly high-res pictures of them on a pretty hairy guy’s wrist.
