Hovering Hoover (Image courtesy Hammacher Schlemmer)By Andrew Liszewski

Besides the nice stainless steel finish this Hoover vacuum appears pretty normal and has all the important features you’d come to expect on a vacuum cleaner these days including HEPA filters, assorted brushes and so forth.

However upon closer inspection you might also notice a lack of any wheels on the unit and that’s because the 12-amp motor which provides the suction is also used to create a cushion of air under the vacuum. Small wheels can sometimes be difficult to roll through carpet or other surfaces but the Hover Hoover’s ability to float makes it quite easy to maneuver even in tight places.

The Hovering Hoover vacuum is available from Hammacher Schlemmer for $269.95 but at the time of writing they appear to be sold out.

  1. We had one of these when I was a toddler in the late 60’s. Problem is they follow you about (no friction) on carpet amd flat surfaces, smacking into your ankles and furniture, then get stuck on thresholds and need picking up.
