Disinfecting UV Scanner (Image courtesy Whatever Works)

Looking to add about 2 hours of extra work to your typical day? Then make sure to carry this folding UV scanner everywhere you go and use it to disinfect everything you might have to touch like door handles, telephones, computer keyboards, mice and faucets. Waving the UV light over an object will kill 99.9% of the germs you might come in contact with, but what about that 0.1% that’s still going to end up on your hands? If they’re tough enough to survive a blast of UV light who knows what harm they’re going to cause you? I suggest just staying home all day and working at your computer in your pajamas. If people think you’re crazy for doing so just tell them you’re a blogger. It worked for me!

Whatever Works sells the handheld UV Scanner for $29.99, but it doesn’t include the 4 AAA batteries you’ll need to wage your war on germs.

  1. Cite?

Without any information, you must assume that this is just another magic sham product to exploit the lucrative market of gullible germophobes.

Wavelength? Surface dose? Who’s the manufacturer that makes these efficacy promises? (and who would be held responsible for damages from prolonged exposure?) I’m inclined to believe that if this really worked as advertised it would give you retina damage and eye cancer.

  2. I,for one, would like to see what is being killed. When the gizmoes are shown by the media on TV as they are investigating and dissing hotels etc.,they say they can see the mites and bedbugs and other critters.

Locate something that has that feature and I will buy(if I can afford it). I want to see the buggers and know they are DEAD!

  3. Yocto thinks like I do… which is why I am doing a search to find supporting data. I don’t neeed to clean the whole house, just a couple of ctitical spots. But I need supporting data.

I know that the USPS is usig UV to kill germs in hopes of killing Anthrax since the 9-11 mail attack (which was not An Alqiaida action, but a US researcher trying to protect his funding from being cut… the timing just worked out “right”)

  4. Ok, found a citation…. ONE. From MSNBC

    http://ori.msnbc.msn.com/id/23018093/

It supports the concept and also reports that one can not let it shine on our skin to do damage, and why it only runs for 10 seconds.

It also reports that UV has been used for some time as a disinfectant… salons, tooth brush cleaners, and other devices.
