We’d all like to think we’d remain calm, cool and collected in the event of an emergency, but I’m sure it wouldn’t take much for panic to set in, particularly if said emergency had you trying to escape a building that was rapidly filling with smoke. Even with glowing red EXIT signs posted outside staircases, finding your way out of a large building becomes infinitely more difficult when you’re crawling on the floor trying to avoid smoke inhalation.
And that was what inspired Foo Wei Zen and Chua Wenfong to create the Halo Light concept. The lights are designed to be installed in hallways leading to escape routes, and in the event of an emergency they use LEDs to project a glowing, pulsing halo on the floor which clearly indicates which direction you need to head for safety. It’s a simple enough concept, and it makes me wonder if the same idea could be implemented using fiber-optic embedded carpeting to clearly indicate an escape route.
I'm a bit confused here.. This thing uses LED's to project a signal on the floor because that's easier to see, right? Wouldn't the smoke block this light?
