GeForce 8600 GT: What Do You Guys Think?

Back at my place now. Had a massive hard drive failure on the desktop the other day. Perfect excuse to order a new barebones kit, right? Sure, the rest is probably fine… but what fun is being sensible? So, stuff came in the mail today, and here’s the video card: XFX GeForce 8600 GT. I know it’s not the newest, or the best. Just was wondering if any of you guys are using this, and if you have any comments about your personal experience with it.

  1. It’s far from the best..with monsters like the HD 3870 X2..

But it’s a great card for it’s low price, even if you won’t be running Crysis any time soon.

XFX is also a great brand, so yeah, you didn’t pretty well =]

  2. I recognize that box. That’s the card that my nephew asked for for Christmas and which I supplied. He did his research and said that it was the best card around for the money…in the neighborhood of a hundred bucks. The user ratings on Newegg are very high and he’s happy with it.

  3. Aww, you should have saved a little more and bought a 8800 gt, Much better and not much more expensive at all. oh well, that cards not bad, I think you can run most of the new games pretty well on it. If you are building a new system, buy yourself a motherboard that support sli and get another 8600. I suggest a xfx 680i LT sli. I did the exact same thing with the computer I am using right now, just with a 8800 gt instead. Sli isn’t really that complecated, I suggest going for it. ( If you get that motherboard, let me just help you before you even encounter trouble, there are two serial ports, make sure you sue the right one. 😛 )

  4. Actually, Alex, that’s the exact motherboard I got, and putting two 8600 in SLI is exactly what I had in mind. I don’t have the second 8600 yet, but at $100, it shouldn’t be long before I order it. I’ll do a post when it comes in, and you can help me out then 🙂

  5. @Alan. Sure, I could have asked that. I could have done some research, and bought a top notch rig with all the best parts. But this was a $400 barebones kit from TigerDirect, and that seemed like a good price. So I bought it, and now I’m just trying to have a little conversation with my readers about the stuff I bought.

Like I said, I’m impulsive. Not sensible. 🙂

  6. @david Well i’m a very impulsive buyer to (hurray for adhd) so i wasnt judging you (or you’re great site) just thought to point out that… well.. you know.
Anyway €400 for a barebone is cheap i would problebly picked it up to ( €268) is practicaly giving it away considering the card goes still for around €100,- around here (netherlands)

  7. my PC has a 8600 GS (GT is better) and most of the new games i can play with a FPS from 30 to 40 with most things on high except the highest anisotropic filtering FSAA @ maximum and anti aliasing on maximum so GT is good enough for the most games (i don’t care about crysis)

  8. That is technically right, but since he already has a 8600 getting another isn’t really that much worse than one 8800. Especially not after he’s overclocked/tuned it with the bundled software.
