If you’re not familiar with the concept of previz just think of it as animated storyboards that are typically created with crude CG. (Crude by the standard of CG effects seen in actual films.) For the most part the previz animations created for even the biggest of hollywood blockbusters looks no different than the graphics seen on your typical console game. (Actually probably well below that.)

So when you think about it how many times have you been playing GTA and thought to yourself what a cool shot for a movie that last pile-up would have made? The makers of FrameForge 3D Studio obviously thought the same way. Since not everyone who wants to make that brilliant low-budget film has the 3D animation skills needed to make effective previz the FrameForge software can make use of an optional USB controller called the Director’s Pad. Basically setting up and animating a 3D scene is as easy as playing a video game. Ok it may not be that easy but for someone just starting out this is probably a great way to ease into the software.

The FrameForge 3D Studio 2 software runs for $399 and if you’re seriously into movie-making it’s probably a worthwhile investment. The optional Director’s Pad USB controller is $29.
