Don’t get us wrong, you still have to go through security. It’s only the long lineups that FlyClear promises to help you avoid. Here’s how it works. You pay the company $100 for one year service, and give them a truckload of info about you: figerprints, DOB, address, etc. Once they’ve checked you out (and ruled you’re likely not a terrorist or unstable or something), they will give you this blue card with a chip on it. Once you’ve got that, you present yourself at a Clear line in a participating airport, and you get to skip the whole lineup. You still have to go through X-Ray, but you’ll get there faster than anyone else due to the dedicated line. The company is even working on some technology that if approved by the TSA would allow passengers to keep their shoes and jackets on.

Of course, the problem is that it’s currently only available at very few airports: Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (CVG), Indianapolis (IND), New York JFK Terminal 7 (JFK), Orlando (MCO) and San José (SJC), with a few more on the way. And yeah, we know the company’s been around and doing this for some time, but we’re choosing now to talk about it.

  1. It blows my mind that the TSA is wasting our tax dollars on working with private companies to make security easier for a few people, instead of using that money to make the process better for all.

  2. I have been using this for about a year out of Orlando and it is awesome! They now allow you to keep your shoes on and the nice attendants actually get your bins for you to put your computer in and cut right in front of angry line-waiters. Get it if you travel!

  3. Better idea, boycott flying until they wise up?

What better way to 1) reduce polution and 2) get better service and treatment.

But no, people like YOU are SHEEPLE.

  4. This is just another special perk for those with more money to spend; it really has nothing to do with security when you look into it.

In the regular line they check photo ID and boarding pass; in the Flyclear line they check clear card (with fingerprint or iris) and boarding pass, with extra helpers for getting your stuff into the bins etc. Then you go through the same sort of Xray machines – which is the real security. The fingerprint/iris scan thing is just window dressing.

BUT since most travellers won’t shell out an extra $100/yr, the Flyclear line is shorter (and there is that extra help too). It’s no different than early loading and better food for premium passengers, except that it’s the govt granting the perks an d creating two level service for two levels of citizen.

Typical Bush admin approach – offer better service to those with more money and pretend it has something vaguely to do with security rather than money, and give an exclusive contract to a friendly private company to exploit this gov’t created niche, rather than improve service for everybody (what does providing extra personnel to help premium customers fill their bins more easily have to do with preventing terrorism?)

Joe T, if the gov’t isn’t paying anything for this – are the extra helpers in the flyclear line TSA employees with all govt salaries and benefits, or FlyClear employees with special permissions to work inside the security area?

  5. Unfortunately it would seem that airport security is here to stay. At least there is something available to ease the insanity! At any rate, here’s a great way to save on your new Clear Card!
