So here’s the deal: power is costly.  Not sure about where you live, but my little studio apartment can end [up costing me about $150 per month in electricity, or about one third of my rent.  Ridiculous.  In my case, that power comes from a hydro plant, which does damage the environment but certainly not as much as the poor folk at the Fukushima power plant in Japan, say.

Still, traditional power sources are dirty (coal, nuclear, etc.)… but wind isn’t so bad.  It’s definitely cleaner.  Until now though, a power company was the only one equipped to take advantage of that source of energy, since traditional turbines are huge, and very costly.  But Sauer Energy has developed a vertical-axis turbine that is much smaller, can be mounted on the roof of your home, doesn’t need to always face the wind (it works 360 degrees) and doesn’t cost a liver and an arm.  It can be installed within 4 hours with the help of your electrician and will start generating power right away.  Plus you’ll instantly be known as the neighbor with the propeller-looking thing on his roof!

If it works as advertised, the VAWT has a lot of promise.  Should you live in a windy area, your power bill might run down to $0, or heck… maybe the power company will end up owing you!  The turbine will be available this fall for a projected price of $7,000, with a 10-year warranty. Sauer Energy

  1. The thing with any of these renewable energy gizmos is that if you leave it a year the products will be better and cost less. I’m a big fan of the concept, in theory, but there was a rash of criminal mis-selling of roof-mounted solar panels over the past few years, with pensioners especially being sold multi-thousand pound packages that wouldn’t ever re-pay the cost of installation in their lifetime.

At this stage proper insulation and replacing inefficient boilers and such is a more economical way to save money and use less power, rather than trying to get that power for “free” – it’s not free, obviously and in your example it would take four years to earn back the cost, but that’s not allowing for maintenance and whether you’d even be able to generate ALL your energy requirements this way and all the time as the wind isn’t constant.

When you can buy this technology built into a new home as standard THAT’s when to get it.

  2. Old scam, new name. A few years ago a friend, now a former friend, tried to get me to buy into a similar technology. I got my calculator out & did some number crunching. His vertical axis wind turbine claimed to extract more BTUs worth of power out of wind that actually existed in the wind. I asked to see a workin unit. Still haven’t seen one after almost 8 years.

This unit looks suspiciously similar, but doesn’t make quite the same outrageous claims. The power numbers it is claiming indicate this unit is extremely efficient & given the price…. I kinda doubt it.

Personally, I’d read all this with a heavy dose of skepticism. It comes close to having almost zero drag at first glance w/o the number crunching. Not gonna waste my time refuting it.
