Not content with just chronicling mankind’s ability to grow fingernails, or cook up giant versions of random foods, the Guinness Book Of World Records will be releasing a Gamer’s Edition in February to chronicle the greatest achievements in the world of electronic gaming. The special edition, which the publication plans to update every year, will presumably include records for high scores, speed runs, as well as a host of miscellaneous trivia that can be re-packaged as a bona-fide record. (Like naming Mario the ‘Most Prolific Video Game Character.’) I wonder if they’ll include the record amount of time it took me to get tired of the Halo series? Or how quickly I returned my PSP with the 7 hot pixels on the screen? Or even how fast the fanboys will start posting comments on this story?
You can actually take a look at the first 24 pages of the book right now, thanks to an interactive preview on the Guinness website. Personally, I think the whole idea would work far better as an interactive website, particularly if they were able to strike up deals with online services like Steam or XBox Live to keep the data current. As it stands, having to wait a whole year to see who the new record holder might be on a specific game seems kind of behind the times.
