SplitFish

By Chris Scott Barr

I’ve been a PC gamer for a long time. Sure, I have my consoles for certain games, but you just can’t beat the keyboard/mouse combination on the computer. Not long ago I finally picked up a copy of Modern Warfare 2 for my 360 for the simple reason that I have a number of friends playing on Xbox Live. I get by with the controller, but I still long for a mouse that can be used with a console. While at CES, SplitFish showed me their new Dual SFX Evolution, which is exactly what I need.

I got to sit down with not only the SplitFish crew, but Denis zDD Dozier (the #1 ranked COD player in the world) to check out this awesome controller for the PS3. Essentially what you have is half of a modified controller for one hand, and a fairly standard mouse for the other. The result is having the best of both the console and PC worlds together in one package.

Just being able to play with a mouse on the PS3 is enough to sell me on this controller. However, SplitFish has gone all-out on this thing. Every button is fully customizable. If you don’t like where a button is mapped, change it.  If you need to hit multiple buttons at the same time, assign a macro. Yes, I said macro.

Macros are easy to setup on this controller; just hit the macro button, press the button you want it assigned to, then hit the buttons in the order you need them. Another tap on the macro button and you’re done. While this might not be all that useful in FPS, the true power of this feature was showcased in a game of Tekken. Just assign a macro for your character’s best combo’s and unleash the fury with a single button. Is it cheating? Well let’s just say your friends probably won’t want to play you unless they have one of these for themselves.

When it comes to FPS like Modern Warfare 2, this is really going to give you the edge you need. Nothing is more accurate than a mouse, which is exactly what this controller delivers. While I don’t usually get too excited about shelling out cash for fancy controllers, this one is well worth the $90 asking price.

  1. I usually don't play FPSs on consoles because I find it harder. I like the keys being available and the ability to have more options than 8 buttons if your lucky. Yet this setup might work. I'd have to test it out before I say ya or nah, it's just a matter of comfort.

  2. Yea this controller was really reaaly good. I use and since i wasnt a PC gamer prior to using this it took some time to get used to it. It took around 2 days to get used to it. But once I did I noticed how much greater my accuracy became. It just takes time on games to figure out the sensitivity and in game sensitivity. I love all the features the controller has to offer. I love the splitfish products. They have firmware updates for the controller. I use the FragFX v2. The evo looks even better and has even more features that the v2 does. I have no complaits about the v2. I can not go back to 360 and use its controller. My accuracy on 360 and a normal controller is so much worst. I support this and all the products Splitfish create completely.

  3. I have been using the FragFx v2 for awhile now and I must say it has improved my game. The ability to customize the button layout is key to making the game feel better. Since I love playing FPS on PC this controller gives me the feel of playing just like on the PC. Hands down the best controller I have ever used.

Now, that the Evolution is out this will help when playing sports games competitively. Being able to program macros is huge.

For instance when I was playing World of Warcraft in arenas programming macros to do certain spells in order was key. So, macros are huge in games. Just another reason to get the Evolution :).

  5. The FragFx v2 controller has enabled me to improve my game on first person shooters. Now, that the Evolution is out this will help improve my game in fighting and other sports games.

  6. These rock, one of the best accessories I've used. I wasn't sure at 1st, but w/ in a few days I was back to winning pubs and doing great. Aiming became much easier and using this was a brought a breathe of fresh air back to my hardcore gaming sessions. Currently using the V.2 and will be getting the Frag Pro asap. Kudos to SF!!!!

  7. Charles, no way is this cheating, I don't understand why you'd say that, does the user get and upper hand to someone using the sixaxis, sure, but everyone has the opportunity to use it, just go out and buy it. If it was a mod and wasn't available on the open market, that's one thing, but that clearly isn't the situation here.

  8. Great product. The FragFX is a great controller. If you are a PC gamer, having difficulties using a analog controller, the FragFX will benefit you. If you are a console gamer, these are very easy to adapt to, and before you know it, you will see the increase of your accuracy. The fact that the Frags are customizable and comforting, sells me. Frags are built very strong and sturdy. Both hardware and software are unreal. Not the mention how great Splitfish's support is. They give no problems and have the answer to all of your questions. Constructive criticism is accepted by Splitfish, and that is one reason as to why they are successful. They are always looking to better their products. Overall, great product and company. I recommend it to any gamer at any skill level.

  9. Jessicat it all depends on how big your hands are. If your hands are small i suggest going with the the v2 or the v2 S.E. The s.e. is just a v2 but with a few changes. but if you don't mind the bigger mouse the pro is much better. only downside is that it is wireless. so there would be some lag time. the pro has a laser mouse which is also way better then the optical mouse the v2 has. The pro also more weight. and even more functions that the v2 does not have. if you got any questions ill try my best to answer. I have the v2, Pro, and the Evo. So hopefully i can help.

  10. Hello again, FYI, the Frag Pro firmware release has been delayed so the software could be perfected. I personally can't wait to give this baby the work out it's been waiting for.

  11. I will never go back to the DualShock 3 after using the Frag. Its the comfort, control, and design that blew me away. I can say if you play your playstation more than 2 days a week you should have a frag because its game changing.
