I’m all for gadgets designed to assist those who might be ‘differently abled’ than I am, like this sign language translator from Krown Manufacturing, Inc. It’s basically a touch screen PDA-like device that will translate any word in its 3,500 word vocabulary into sign language, through the use of videos of a guy doing the signing. The vocabulary can be expanded via software updates and the rechargeable battery is good for about 6 hours of use on a single charge. It’s expected to be released in May of this year, and the $199 price tag seems relatively accessible.
However, I have to wonder why the deaf person you’re attempting to speak to in sign language can’t just look over your shoulder while you’re entering the words? Seems to me this device would better find its niche with those attempting to learn sign language.
The person you're trying to cmmunicate with can read the text you're typing if he / she can read and can read english. Is sign language international? I know there are several different signlanguages, but I'm not sure how they differ..
As the hearing parent of a child with a profound hearing loss, this device is going to be fantastic. No more carrying books and hoping I got the sign right. My son and I, before he can read, can see and practice a sign together, anywhere. I'd shell out a couple hundred for that ability while our family is learning sign language.
