It’s hard to believe it’s already been 5 years since the Northeast Blackout of 2003. While the experience left me without power for only about 24 hours, it gave me a greater appreciation for air conditioning, how crappy current battery technology is, and how important it really is to have a working flashlight always available. That’s probably why the Castlight seems like a good investment to me. On one hand it cleverly disguises a powerful LED flashlight allowing you to keep it on a shelf or mantle without looking paranoid about the next power failure, and on the other hand it provides a convenient place to put a candle when the flashlight’s batteries inevitably run out. It features a specialized rubber finish to give it texture and provide a firm grip, but unfortunately also comes with a price tag of about $64 from LazyboneUK. At that price I’d probably be willing to live with a giant Maglite sitting on the dining room table.
