Bitdefender

When it comes to protecting your PC, there are a bunch of choices available to you.  It's hard to know which way to go, but it turns out that one of the best options on the market at the moment is Bitdefender Total Security.  It's a full-featured suite of programs rather than a stand-alone anti-viral application, but it's got a few aspects to it that make it less cumbersome than similar software.  I had the chance to take a look at it, and I feel like it's hard to do it justice without a lengthy review, which this isn't.  You should know that BitDefender earned CNET's and PCMag's Editor's Choice award, and that is saying a lot.

So what's the big deal?  Well, aside from, you know, actually protecting you from malware, BitDefender includes some pretty nifty features like:

  • BitDefender Auto-Pilot. This was one of my favorites, as it allows you to run the software in stealth mode.  No popups, no interruptions requiring you to interact with it.  It's in the background and you for get it.
  • BitDefender SafePay.  This helps you with online transactions, avoiding fraud and phishing scams.
  • BitDefender AntiTheft. This is a laptop recovery service.  You can track the computer, lock it from a distance and even wipe it if you know you can't recover it.
  • Social Network Protection.  This monitors the links you receive through Twitter and Facebook, pretecting you in case your friends are unknowingly sending you stuff that could get your pC in trouble, as well as keeping an eye on your privacy features for you.

This is of course just an overview of some of the features.  Once I had it installed, I enjoyed the dashboard that was displayed in a corner of the screen.  Even though I could close it out of view, it was nice to see at a glance what BitDefender was up to.  Everything worked as it should, performing a full system scan in a few hours.  No… it's not the fastest horse in the stable, but it doesn't slow the computer down.  It's the scans that are lengthy.  But that's ok if it provides thorough protection, which it seemed to.

  1. I purchased Bitdefender in August of 2012. I thought it was the one for me seeing it has been great for my computer. But they are sorely lacking in customer service. I had some sorta issue going on with my laptop, I put in a service ticket 1 week ago. I received an auto response later that night. And to date nothing, nada, zip…So I guess once they have your money that is all that matters….
