August Smart Lock

Smart security systems are nothing new, but August takes things to a whole new level by making it social with the August Smart Lock. The product of the work of designer Yves Béhar and technology entrepreneur Jason Johnson, the lock functions like most other smart locks in the market which unlock when the virtual or digital key is detected nearby.

Its defining function is perhaps its social features which makes it easy for the homeowner to provide access to family, friends, and guests when they come over to visit. The lock can be easily retrofitted to fit existing deadbolts, so there’s definitely no problem on that end. In fact, its makers explain that it should just be a quick two-screw job for about 90% of US-made deadbolts.

Function-wise, the August Smart Lock uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology to pair with compatible devices, specifically the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, in order to grant access for you and for up to ten other residents or guests.

By eliminating physical keys, one prevalent human flaw–that of carelessness–is addressed. People who perpetually lose their keys would find this technology particularly useful since they won’t have to deal with the stress of lost keys and everything else that comes with it ever again. There are many systems you can choose from, and the sooner you find the right home security choice for your needs, the better. In fact, you can start going at it the smart and automated way with smart locks.

The August Smart Lock makes use of rechargeable AA batteries as a power source, so it stays online even in the event of a power outage. Other features include a log record so you can see who entered and exited your home as well as the date and time they did, invite lists, a guestbook feature, and auto-unlock.

Pre-orders for the August Smart Lock are now open, with the price set at $199.
