That’s right. Researchers at Valencia Technical University in Spain, as part of the LABELS project, have managed speeds of 20Gbps, with theoretical room to push it up to 40Gbps. They’re using new(?) technology called Optoelectronics. The quick gist?

The technology relies on subcarrier multiplexing and label swapping in packet data transfer, allowing nodes at different stages along the network to change the wavelength at which the data is being carried.

If you’re into techtalk and all that noise, you should definitely read the article. The part I care about is, well, 40Gbps browsing!
