Once again proving that desktop machine can cram an amazing amount of hardware, versus say, laptops, the HP Pavilion Elite Phoenix h9xt featured here comes with 10GB of RAM. 10! Aside from that, here are the pretty impressive specs: Core i7-3820 Six-core 3.6GHz processor, 2TB HDD, USB 3.0, 1GB GeForce GTX 550Ti graphics card, liquid cooling system, BD-ROM & DVD Burner drive, wireless-N, 15-in-1 card reader and Beats Audio. As you can imagine this usually would cost a pretty penny. $1,549 to be exact. But today after a $250 rebate, you can pay a (still pretty steep) $1,199.

When we saw the HD preview footage of Battlefield 3, we got excited: graphics looked amazing. But when we played the console version, we cried gamer’s tears: it was nothing like the previews. No doubt these had been generated on a PC rather than on a console and the difference highlights just how much processing power can be crammed into a desktop computer. The liquid-cooled Alienware Aurora is a serious rig, sporting a 2nd Gen Core i7 3.4GHz Quad-core processor as well as dual GeForce GT 545 cards in SLI configuration. Coming in the smaller MicroATCX form factor, the Aurora also runs 8GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive, DVD burner and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Sure, there are machines with more more power around, but for $1,199 after a $430 slash, it’s not a bad deal.

But it’s still a decent deal, as this rebate pretty much slashes the price in two, bringing Epson’s 545 printer’s price down from $130 to $65, shipped. This is probably the same price as the toner cartridges you clearly need right now, so might as well upgrade the printer and get new cartridges along with it, no?

By David Ponce

[ Energizer sponsored OhGizmo! to attend CES 2012. Opinions are my own. -Ed. ]

A fundamental shift in the way we recharge our mobile devices is underway and most of us aren’t really aware of it. But over the last few years, wireless charging technology has been making huge strides and it’s now reaching the point where it might become ubiquitous. Here’s what you need to know.

Much like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi are standard transmission protocols that allow connected devices from any manufacturers who use the technology to communicate with one another, there is now a new transmission protocol for wireless inductive charging called Qi (pronounced “chee”) which allows consumers to conveniently power smartphones and other devices today and in the future, regardless of manufacturer. It’s being curated by the Wireless Power Consortium, a conglomerate of more than100 companies of which Energizer was one of the early members.

With the launch of the dual zone Energizer Inductive Charger, Energizer launched into the world of Qi and wireless inductive charging, allowing consumers easy, convenient, cord-free charging for any Qi-enabled device. Following the introduction of the first ever suite of Qi products, Energizer has since expanded the line with Qi sleeves for the most popular smart phones, including the iPhone®4, and developed a single zone version of the inductive charger for those interested in having an extra charging pad in their office or on a bedside table.

And what’s really exciting is that we’re now starting to get past the early days of the technology, where external cases needed to be retrofitted over mobile devices to enable them to be charged without wires. Manufacturers are now starting to integrate Qi chips right at the OEM level into phone battery or battery door so that the phone you buy, for example, is the phone you charge inductively, no need for extra accessories. Some examples include the Samsung DROID Charge, the HTC Thunderbolt and the DROID 3 by Motorola to name a few. Check out www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com to see all the different Qi products that were shown at CES.

At CES I was also able to see devices being charged without wires through regular surfaces with no apparent charge pad built in. There was a see-through purse with a cellphone inside which started charging just as the entire bag was put down on a charge pad (pictured above). And cellphones charging through wooden tabletops with no visible pads. There even was a car’s center console that features two chargepads where you can simply lay down your phone (as you probably do now) and have it charge at the same time (pictured below). The possibilities are really interesting. The future will be seamless and more importantly, wire-free. And it’s not too far off, though of course there’s going to be a transition phase. For now, many devices that are not Qi-enabled can still take advantage of the benefits of inductive charging and the Energizer Inductive Charger with sleeves or doors from Energizer and others that will make compatibility sleeves and doors.

The buzz this year at CES has been around 3D TVs, Ultrabooks and Windows 8, but what caught my attention came from a company once known for their batteries, Energizer. Moving well beyond that stereotype, Energizer showcased a whole portfolio of products that meet the power needs of a wide range of devices you depend on. One product in particular that I never would have, but should have, associated Energizer with was a line of lighting products for the home.

I say I should have because Energizer informed me that they have been in the lighting business for more than 110 years making a variety of flashlights including ones for everyday use to ones used by military professionals. It only makes sense that they use their advanced lighting technology for a line of household lights.

And advanced it is. So far, two collections, The Glas and Edge Collections, have launched. The line I saw first-hand at CES was The Edge Collection and not only does it have a sleek look, but the technology built into each light is pretty interesting. Developed with the latest in LED technology, the collection uses advanced circuitry and optics to create an integrated lighting system that enhances your environment, creating just the right ambiance. What is really cool is that you never have to replace the LEDs.

There are currently four products within The Edge Collection, two of which even replicate the flicker of a candle. They instantly add a stylistic flair to a room and their flickering effect is very realistic. They turn on with a simple touch and would look great on a coffee table or even a dining table. The Glas and Edge Collections were the first two launched and soon to make its debut is the Ambiana Collection which is expected out this spring.

I know I was impressed with these lights and I think consumers will be too. This is going to be a fun category to watch as new products are launched. Check out www.energizer.com/lighting to see what the Energizer household lighting collection is all about.
