Samsung’s New Front Loading Washing Machine Lets You Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

Front-loading washing machines have many advantages over traditional top-loading ones, like needing less water to accomplish the same tasks. But one drawback is that once the cycle has started, you can’t usually add any more clothes. Samsung’s new WW8500 AddWash changes that by incorporating a second small door on the main front door, which you can use to add things mid-cycle. Just press the pause button, and add whatever you want without any of the water spilling out the front. It’s a pretty high-tech washing machine that even includes WiFi so that you can monitor your cycle with your smartphone. There’s no word on pricing or availability, but you can bet it won’t be the cheapest machine on the block.

This Exists: Samsung’s 16TB SSD

1TB and 2TB hard drives are pretty common these days. What isn’t, is a 16TB SSD. That is pretty insane, and it’s exactly what Samsung recently announced. The PM1633a features 500 256 gigabit (32 gigabyte) NAND flash chips crammed inside a 2.5 inch enclosure, albeit one with twice the thickness as a standard 2.5 inch hard drive found in laptops. This gives it a total capacity of 15.36TB, which Samsung feels comfortable calling “about 16TB”. It’s really impressive, and we expect the price to be equally as impressive; considering the drive was demonstrated in a server packed with 48 of them (totally a jaw dropping 768TB, operating at “2,000,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second). By comparison, the consumer-grade SSD that you have in your PC is probably capable of around 10,000-90,000 IOPS, depending on the workload.”), it’s clear the drive is targeted at enterprise customers who will have less trouble justifying its rumoured $5,000 price tag. Exact pricing and availability haven’t been announced yet, however.

Samsung: Take A Self-Portrait, Not A Selfie

With a little bit of imagination and creativity, advertising agencies can often take a dull message (“Hey! New point-and-shoot camera!”) and come up with an angle that makes the product stand out. Take the above Van Gogh self-portrait… It’s an ad by the agency Leo Burnett Switzerland for Samsung’s new “NX mini [camera] with a 3-inch flip-up display and interchangeable wide-aperture lens”, and features three iconic self-portraits, re-imagined as if they’d been made by taking a selfie. It thus tries to elevate the banal act of taking a selfie into something more grandiose, implying that this camera will somehow make them more special. Yeah… nice try. A selfie is a selfie and the ad won’t make us want to buy a dedicated point-and-shoot that doesn’t do much more than what our phones can do. But… it’s still a nice try. Gotta give credit where it’s due. So hit the jump for two more of these ads.

Purported Samsung Galaxy S5 Concept Design

Samsung Galaxy S5 Concept

We’ve yet to see a leaked image of the purported Samsung Galaxy S5, but the folks at Sim Only Radar designed what they think could be the next Galaxy S handset, with a rounder display and very thin bezels. A rumor has it that the upcoming Galaxy S5 will come in two versions: one featuring a curved display with metal design while the other one will carry the same plastic form factor as the previous Galaxy S versions. And, the concept image goes pretty well with what we’ve heard about the appearance of the handset.

The handset is rumored to come with a 5-inch Super AMOLED display boasting a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, 4GB of RAM, 16GB storage with microSD card slot, a 64-bit processor, a 16MP ISOCELL camera with Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed out of the box. There’s no official word about the availability, but rumors suggest it will launch by the end of Q1 next year, possibly by the end of February 2014 while a few of them points at April.

Rumor Mill: Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch to be Announced Next Month?

Galaxy Gear smartwatch

Rumors about the iWatch have been floating around for months. Samsung, being one of Apple’s toughest competitors, obviously wouldn’t be very far behind with their own smartwatch if that were the case. Word on the blogosphere is that Samsung is getting ready to unveil their Galaxy Gear smartwatch next month.

There are already a whole bunch of digital watches in the market with added features and functionality, like the Pebble watch, but the big guns in the mobile industry haven’t unveiled their own smart gizmos…yet.

Rumor Mill: Samsung to Launch the Galaxy Gear Smart Watch at IFA

Samsung Galaxy Gear Smart Watch

The competition between Samsung and Apple is fiercer than ever. It’s been rumored for months that Apple is working on a smart watch, but Samsung is working actively to beat them to the punch.

Sources say that Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Gear Smart Watch at their IFA press event, which will be held on September 4th. Apple is also said to be planning a press conference announcing the iWatch this September, but specifics on both events are not yet available or officially announced by either manufacturer.

Few details have been confirmed for the Galaxy Gear, but you can expect it to be compatible with Samsung’s wide range of smartphones and tablets.

Samsung’s ATIV Q Hybrid Runs Windows and Android, Could Crush the Competition

Samsung ATIV Q

Samsung wants to crush the competition and they’re pulling out all the stops with the ATIV Q. It’s a tablet-hybrid laptop that not only runs Android, but Windows 8 too. As if that’s not enough, it comes with a sharp 3,200 by 1,800 qHD+ display. The ATIV Q measures 13.3 inches diagonal, making it larger than Samsung’s previous tablets. But that’s probably just as well, especially when you want to use it with its keyboard.

Samsung’s ATIV Q runs on a Core i5 Haswell, so you shouldn’t be too concerned about Windows performance. Users can switch between both operating systems easily with a push of a button. In fact, both Windows and Android can actually run side by side. Samsung also made sure to keep important files and essential documents visible on both systems, so you don’t need to switch between systems just to open a particular file.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Rumored to Come With a New Samsung-Designed Shooter

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

After the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4, people’s attention naturally went to the Galaxy Note. Rumors are rife that the third-generation phablet device might be unveiled at a press event in London later this month. Specifically, on June 20th.

You can expect Samsung to make notable upgrades to the device. The camera has been the main focus of speculation, with earlier sources saying that it will come with a 13-megapixel shooter. New reports now indicate that Samsung has been working on new features for the Note 3’s shooter. This was purportedly revealed by a Samsung executive, who said: “We are pondering various technologies at this stage – for example, OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and shutter functions. But, nothing has yet to be confirmed, so we cannot conclusively say that those functions will be added to the Galaxy Note 3.”
