Tricks Done Right: Flying R/C Quadcopter Ghost with Glowing Eyes

October is the month when pranksters let loose, where almost everyone becomes a victim of their sometimes funny and often scary pranks and practical jokes. Taking things one step further is Alton Porter. He built a flying remote-controlled ghost that has glowing eyes that definitely adds to the scare factor.

Alton’s probably having a few laughs right now as he flies his R/C ghost around for a test run before unleashing it onto unsuspecting trick-or-treaters come October 31st. If you know him personally or live in the same neighborhood, you might want to avoid his house if you don’t want the living daylights scared out of you or your kid…or not, because in hindsight, that’s what makes Halloween fun in the first place.

A $50 Autonomous Quad-Rotor That Obeys Your Voice Commands? Sign Us Up!

Let’s start by saying that the above product can’t be bought right now. It barely even exists. But if tech firm Always Innovating follows through on their plans for the MeCam UAV, they could have a winner on their hands. Their idea is to make an autonomous quad rotor bot with an ARM Cortex-A9 processor, and which features 1 GB of built-in RAM, an SD card slot, a camera, and is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled. With these hardware specs, the bot would then be able to take videos of you as you move around, going higher or lower at your command. It would also be able to follow you autonomously, and record your shenanigans from above as if someone else was in control. Imagine the possibilities!

Of course, not much is know about which of these capabilities are functional at the moment, and which are just in the pipeline. But if all goes well, Always Innovating would have a workable product by next year. And that’s only if they find a commercial partner to license the design from them., since they don’t want to make it themselves.

That’s a lof of “if”, so we’re not holding our breaths.

Awesome Dad Builds Quadcopter So His Son Doesn’t Have to Walk to the Bus Stop Alone

Quadcopter

Joining the ranks of cool mom Cory and awesome dad Mike is Paul Wallich. He didn’t mod his kid’s push car into a DeLorean nor did he mod Zelda and turn Link into a girl. Instead, he did something that isn’t only fun but pretty useful at the same time: he built a quadcopter that tracks and walks his son to the bus stop.

Call him lazy, but you have to admit that it’s a pretty ingenious device. Paul wanted to keep an eye on his son when the latter made his way to and from the stop. But at the same time, he didn’t want to go out there and do some actual walking either. So instead, he took a basic quadcopter kit, strapped an old smartphone into it so that he could stream the live feed to his home computer, and installed a navigation program in order to track the GPS beacon in his son’s backpack.

Convenience for the dad, and instant popularity for the kid. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
