I’ve still got a collection of my favorite NES games sitting in my closet, just begging to be used creatively. My old NES died long ago and I have emulators to satisfy my classic gaming habits, so I don’t really have a need for them. I’ve wanted to find something really cool to do with some of them, and I think I’ve found a project that will make use of at least one.

A crafty modder named airz managed to cram a working NES (emulator, not the real deal of course) and a 2.8-inch LCD inside a single cartridge. Now he can play just about any classic NES game by just grabbing his old Mario Bros./Duck Hunt game. It can do a few other things like play MP3s and whatnot, thanks to the PMP he used for the emulator. I’ve seen other similar mods, Such as the one by ‘darkeru‘ (this mod was inspired by his work) but this one is the best I’ve seen thus far.

It’s hard to find a geek that grew up in the 80’s/early 90’s that doesn’t love the Transformers. Thanks to the fact that the Robots in Disguise are celebrating their 25th anniversary (oh, and those two movies) we’ve seen a huge influx of transforming merchandise. Of course, some of the coolest pieces have come not from Takara/Hasbro, but rather from fans of the series. Back in July we showed you someone’s custom-built Devastator, which unlike the movies, stayed true to the original design. Well here’s another custom work for you to feast your eyes on.

Yes, this Optimus Prime is based off of the second movie, which may turn some of you off to it. However, the sheer level of detail here should be enough to give you pause. Before you ask, yes it transforms. It’s actually based on the TFTM 07 Leader Class Optimus Prime figure, which does take away some of the appeal. However, the crafter replaced a number of pieces and hand-painted it to reach the more realistic level of detail. If you absolutely must have this piece, you can find it on eBay. The bidding is currently at $730, so you’d better have some deep pockets.

If I were going to get one, I’d go for something a little less than ordinary. I’d either get one that actually did a little more than show pictures, or I’d make my own. From the looks of this mod, it would be pretty easy to use an Eee PC for one.

Having a full-fledged computer working as your picture frame does leave you with a lot more options. Now you can add a touchscreen and control various media through the house with a touch. The early Eee PCs are really cheap, so this might just be a fun mod for someone who doesn’t just want a boring digital picture frame.

We all know that the 360 is prone to failure. I think that collectively we have had to send in our units a total of 5 times here at GamerFront. Luckily they have all been covered under the extended warranty. But when you have a failure that isn’t covered, what exactly do you do with that old broken console? Sure, you could keep it for spare parts, but what’s the fun in that? A better option would be to mod it into something useful like this guy did.

When you think about it, a bricked 360 makes a perfect arcade stick housing. Physically, it looks good and is plenty durable enough for you. Then of course you have the irony factor that you’re using a $200 machine as an arcade stick. Kudos to Seppun for this kick-ass mod.

Apparently some Russian guy went and saw the movie, and decided that he absolutely had to have a Wall-E computer. He’s a pretty cool little robot, so I can understand putting in a little effort and making something decent looking. However, this guy went the whole nine yards. He flawlessly fashioned the entire thing from sheet metal. The pictures here hardly do it justice, so I recommend checking out the full step-by-step process on the original site. My only suggestion for the next person that tries this is to put a Mac in there. Everyone knows Wall-E was a Mac.

Not long ago there was a mod floating around the interweb where a guy had turned the Apple logo on his MacBook into an LCD screen. Well Eddie Zarick (the guy that did the original mod) has been gracious enough to post full instructions on how to do this.
There are times when I’m on the road, and neither my iPhone or my DS can really satisfy my gaming needs. Thankfully I picked up one of the new MacBook Pro’s not long ago, and can get a pretty decent gaming experience on there if needed. However, if I’m up for some Rock Band, or anything else that requires my 360, I’m pretty much out of luck. I mean who really wants to go through all of the hassle of unplugging it from their TV, loading up all of the cables (and that massive power brick), just for a bit of fun on the road? Well if your name is Ben Heck, you don’t bother with trivial things like that. You just fashion yourself an Xbox 360 laptop.

While this isn’t the first Xbox 360 laptop to see the light of day (if I’m not mistaken, this is Ben’s 3rd go at it), its certainly the best-looking one yet. It’s got everything that you need to play, including an LCD screen, speakers, wi-fi card, Vision camera, dual memory card slots and a removable hard drive. While it does greatly resemble a laptop, it’s quite heavy. I believe the exact weight is “almost as much as my sister’s cat”. He does his best to solve the heat issue with lots and lots of ventilation, which will hopefully prevent the seemingly inevitable RRoD. So how do you get your hands on one? You don’t. This was a special commissioned piece, which is not up for sale.

This machine has just about everything you could imagine, right down to functioning runway lights. You’ll find 3 2.5-inch LCD screens, and a nice 10-inch LCD screen on the side, just in case you’ve forgotten a full-sized one. Even more impressive is the slot-loading optical drive hidden behind the Battlestar Galactica medallion. I can’t even imagine the sort of time and effort it took to put this together. Kudos to Boddaker, the mastermind behind this incredible project.

Etsy is always a great spot to find handmade stuff, even modified electronics. The seller Echostatic has two controllers up for sale that have been modified so that they will work on your computer. They modded the classic NES controller and the Sega Genesis controller. They both plug in via USB and will work on both a PC and a Mac. They have even been tested and work fine with Linux as well.

The NES controller has one extra trick up its sleeve. If you press a particular series of buttons, the NES can then be used as a mouse. Sadly the Genesis controller doesn’t have the same perk, but it does come with a free zombie. There are three Genesis controllers in stock and are sold for $35 a piece. Sadly there is only one NES controller in stock as of now, so you’ll have to move fast. It’s being sold for $33.

Have you ever been sitting around and realized that you have some extra junk lying around? Sure, we all find ourselves in such a situation from time to time. Most people generally make a trip to GoodWill or try to sell their stuff on eBay. If you happen to find yourself with a spare toaster and NES, then I might suggest combining the two into a single awesome piece of hardware.

No, this mod won’t allow you to make toast whilst playing Burger Time, you’ll need your other toaster to do that. There isn’t a ton of info on this particular mod, which is unfortunate. The coolest part definitely has to be the fact that the power button is controlled by either pressing down or lifting up on the handle.
