iPad 2 and iPhone 4S Owners, Now’s The Time To Upgrade To 5.0.1 If You Hope To Ever Jailbreak

By David Ponce

If you’ve had the iPad 2 from day one and have patiently been waiting on iOS 4.3.3 (or 5.0 on the iPhone 4S) for an untethered jailbreak to be released for your A5 equipped device, before upgrading to iOS 5.0.1, there is hope on the horizon. But there’s also a call of action that you need to take now. Well known hacker pod2g has been working on the untethered jailbreak and recently announced that its release was “only a few [days] to wait now.” But Apple will soon release iOS 5.1, for which there will be no jailbreak, and will stop signing 5.0.1. This means if you don’t upgrade to 5.0.1 now, you may lose your window of opportunity to jailbreak your device for quite some time. So upgrade now, while you still can. You might have to go a few days without the benefits of a jailbreak, but at least you’ll be in the clear once pod2g feels the hack is ready for prime time.

Zephyr App For Jailbroken iPhones Brings Multitasking Gestures

By David Ponce

We’re not big fans of companies segmenting their devices’ capabilities artificially in order to boost sales. Like when Apple puts Siri on the iPhone 4S when it runs just fine on older models. Or when Apple brings out multitasking gestures for the iPad but leaves the iPhone out of the equation. Well… we can’t really say that they might have done this last one to encourage people to buy an iPad as well as an iPhone; we don’t see anyone actually saying “gee, I really want to use these gestures but can’t on my phone, so yeah, I’ll buy an iPad.” But we find it frustrating nonetheless. So that’s why we’re happy to hear about this app, called Zephyr, that lets you swipe up to bring up the task bar (instead of double-tapping the home button) and swipe sideways to switch between active apps. I works nicely and is available on Cydia right now. Of course, this requires a jailbreak. But that’s ok, since the first untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 was finally released two days ago.

Check out the video after the jump to see how the app works.

Jailbreak Community Kerfuffle Pushes Back Greenp0ison Release Date

By David Ponce

Geek politics affect our lives almost everyday, only most of us are unaware of this. No Flash on iPhone? Geek ego. No stable jailbreak from the Chronic Dev Team? Geek ego once again. Here’s what happened.

P0sixninja, a member of the dev team announced recently that the Greenpois0n jailbreak would be released on 10/10/10 at 10:10 am. When the extremely talented Geoh0t (aka George Hotz) heard there was now an ETA, he decided to work on his own jailbreak, Limera1n, using an entirely different exploit than the one the dev team had planned on using. In less than a day he was somewhat done; sadly he had in his hands but an untested beta version of a jailbreak. Working, sure, and on a greater number of devices than Greenpois0n would have, but possibly unstable and requiring four bug-fixing re-releases as of this writing. And yet, he released before Greenpois0n, upstaging the dev team. The issue? Continue Reading
