CST-01 Watch Is World’s Thinnest

E-ink displays are great for a number of reasons, one of which is that their technology can be harvested and used in other products, like the watch above: the CST-01. Measuring a ridiculous 0.80mm thin, the timepiece is about the thickness of a slap bracelet. Built around a stainless steel frame, it weighs next to nothing: 12g, or less than the weight of five pennies. But its physical attributes are only half the story. Since it uses e-ink to display the time, it barely uses any power at all. As a matter of fact

the micro energy cell (MEC) that powers the watch is incredible in its own right. It can be recharged 10,000 times and lasts over 15 years. The watch can charge in 10 minutes and we expect [it] to be able to function for a month between charges.

Charges in 10 minutes? Lasts a month? Is super thin? Weighs nothing? Sign us up! Well… we should probably say, we’re tempted to plunk down the $129 for a Kickstarter pre-order. The campaign is more than fully funded at the moment, with $613k raised on a $200k goal. Which means that if all else goes well, delivery will happen in September of 2013.

PopSlate – An iPhone Case With An E-Ink Screen

Why would you want a screen on your iPhone 5 case? So you can snap a picture of whatever you want and use that to personalize the case, of course. Don’t wanna snap a pic? Just use one of at least a dozen pictures you can find on the Interwebs. The case uses an E-Ink screen which sips a tiny bit of battery to change the picture, but at no other time. This means that unless you’re constantly updating the display, it’ll barely have an impact on battery life.

The related application also allows you to exchange pics with your friends, and manage your pictures. Finally, there’s a feature that uses the phone’s accelerometer to help you cycle through your pics by just double tapping the back of your phone. We’re not sure if this is an always-on thing that would have you accidentally changing pics all the time, but we doubt it. And since this uses the Lightning connector it is limited to the iPhone 5.

$99 gets you a case, but the company needs to reach their funding goal beforehand. They’re a little over halfway there, so it might happen.

Seiko To Reveal A New Watch With An Active Matrix E-Ink Display Later This Year

According to their press release, Seiko was the first company to introduce a watch with a low-power e-ink display way back in 2005. But the display on that original model only had a few hundred “pre-positioned segments” which resulted in a screen that worked and looked a lot like traditional LCD-based segmented displays. But the company’s ‘Future Now’ project has developed a way to fit the active matrix EPD, or Electrophoretic Display, technology used in today’s ebook readers into something as small as a watch, giving you a display with 80,000 pixels that are each capable of displaying 4 shades of gray. That equates to a resolution of about 300 dpi and the ability to do a certain level of anti-aliasing. So like an ebook reader, it should be able to display just about anything, but Seiko’s new technology actually uses just 1/100 the power of current e-ink technologies.

Thankfully the watch pictured here is just a prototype designed to demonstrate the new technology, and a “modified version” will be available for sale sometime in the Fall of this year, though specific availability and pricing information has yet to be announced.

Butterfly Displays Offer Vivid Color, Long Battery Life

This is a prototype e-reader from Qualcomm called Mirasol. Apparently, this vivid color display (which doesn’t use a backlight) consumes less power than a monochrome e-ink display:
