Just What We Need: This Seatbelt Jolts Drowsy Drivers to Their Senses

Smart Seatbelt

Numerous car accidents are caused by having a sleepy driver at the wheel. Whether they had a particularly long day or are driving long-distance, the risks remain the same. Driving while drowsy endangers those inside the vehicle as well as those outside of it. With this in mind, the Biomechanics Institute in Valencia, Spain have developed a system called Harken to address driver fatigue and sleepiness.

Harken is basically a smart seatbelt made from “smart” textiles with built-in sensors that can measure a person’s heartbeat and respiration. When it detects that the driver is starting to nod off based on the stats, the system triggers an alarm to jolt the driver awake.

The Only Time Safe Driving is a Game is When ‘RoadWars’ is Fired Up

Road Wars

Driving isn’t a game. Not only will you be putting your life at stake, but you’ll also be risking the lives of your passengers, other drivers on the road, and pedestrians. Driving this point across is RoadWars, which turns driving into a game. It’s a passive game when you’re driving, since all you’re supposed to do is fire it up and put your phone down while you’re on the road. While it runs, the app keeps track of your driving behavior and doles out rewards for safe driving. It’ll also slap you with penalties if you speed, swerve, or use your phone while you’re driving.

RoadWars is a social game, since you’ll be playing among your friends. Eventually, you’ll be able to figure out who among your crew is the safest driver and who among them needs to pay more attention on the road when they’re driving. Coins are awarded for every ten minutes of “safe” driving. By driving safely on certain roads, you’ll also be able to “claim” them. This is where the social aspect comes in, as you’ll have the chance to “steal” roads that your friends have claimed when you’re not driving.

RoadWars is available for free for iOS devices.

Been Ticketed For Driving While Using Your Cellphone? Get A Free Headset.

By Jonathan Kimak

I don’t quite understand the reasoning behind this. Headsets.com has announced that it will give out free Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth headsets to people that have been ticketed for talking on a cellphone (without a headset) while driving.

All you have to do is fill out a form and send in your ticket (Dated AFTER July 1, 2008) and the headset is yours. Only the first 734 offenders will get the headsets and the offer is valid for US residents only.

I just wonder how this is helpful since it rewards one of the most hated demographics (cellphone drivers that aren’t paying attention to the road) of the modern age with a free gift. It makes me wonder if anyone would intentionally try and get caught by the police just so they can get the headset.

Still, if you already got a ticket, you might as well make the most of it and get that free headset.
