R2-D2 Phone Is the Droid You’re Looking For

By Chris Scott Barr

I think most of us can agree that R2-D2 is one of the coolest droids out there. So it’s only natural that the new Verizon Droid 2 is going to have a special limited edition R2-D2 version. This is likely being done to celebrate the anniversary of The Empire Strikes back, which is this year. There aren’t a lot of details floating around just yet, but we should hear more when the device is officially unveiled at this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration V.

Transform Your iPod Touch Into A Phone

By Chris Scott Barr

If you own an iPod Touch, I’m sure there’s been a time or two that you’ve wished it were an iPhone. Unfortunately transforming the device into one means finding a buyer for the iPod Touch, then signing up for a new 2-year agreement with AT&T. If only there were some sort of cheap Chinese gadget that could add phone functionality to it. Apparently there is.

A company called Yosion has crafted an iPod Touch case that, when combined with a regular SIM card, allows your device to operate as a normal phone. This includes placing/receiving calls and sending/receiving text messages. No, it won’t be exactly like having an iPhone, but it will still do the job. You’ll also get a secondary battery that’s going provide up to 4.5 hours of talk time. For between $45 and $75, it could be an interesting buy.

Bringrr Ensures That You Never Leave Your Phone At Home

By Chris Scott Barr

Cell phone have, for better or worse, become an important part of our daily lives. Which is why it really sucks when you get somewhere, only to realize your phone is sitting at home, miles away. I’ve found my own way around that, as I use mine to play all of the music in my car, so I notice right away if I’ve left it in the house. However, if you prefer to listen to the radio, that’s not a viable solution. Instead, you might consider this rather simple device.

Bringrr is a small Bluetooth accessory that detects when your phone is nearby. If you start your car and the phone isn’t present, it will emit a sound to let you know. It’s small, rather cheap ($35) and helps to ensure that you never leave home (or anywhere else, for that matter) without your phone.

New USB Cable Tricks Your Phone Into Becoming A USB Modem

By Chris Scott Barr

If you have a phone with an unlimited data plan, it can be frustrating when the carrier won’t allow you to use your phone as a modem. After all, if you’re paying for unlimited data, why shouldn’t you be able to use it as you please? One company has designed a very special USB cable that claims to let you do just that.

Pretec’s new H220 Intellicable cable has a built-in flash drive, which contains a special suite of software. This allows your computer to trick the phone into thinking it’s a USB modem. Thus, free internet for your laptop. The software takes care of all the necessary communication handshakes in roughly 10 seconds, with nothing actually being installed on your computer. It’s supposed to work with most phones that use either mini-USB or micro-USB. We’re not sure when this will be available, or for how much, but it sounds like it would be worth looking into.
