[CES 2009] Phonograph CD Player Is Totally Useless

By Evan Ackerman

It’s funny how this thing is supposed to be some kind of anachronism, with a CD player built into a phonograph case. The little sensor-arm thingy with the laser in it is a nice touch. (Yes, I know it’s not actually called a “sensor-arm thingy,” but it’s ancient technology, give me a break.) Anyway, what I found funny is that I’d say CDs are also a dead medium, making the entire thing pretty much useless. Look for it in 6 months for about $150.

Music Now Available On CD

Looking for a way to turn an ancient recording medium into something useful? Here’s an idea: combine it with an even more ancient recording medium. Aleks Kolkowski took his vintage vinyl record cutter to Manchester’s Futuresonic 2008 festival and used it to carve one track’s worth of music into old CDs for festival attendees who brought him a digital audio file. Stick the CD on a 45 RPM turntable, and you can groove to the grooves, old school. Oh yeah.
