Rumors suggest that Canon is leaving no stone unturned for a February launch for its EOS 60D DSLR and the Canon 550D/600D. No doubt that Canon has been feeling the heat of the competition from Sony with its point-and-shoots waterproof cameras and Nikon with its swivel-screen displays.

The Canon 60D may inherit 50D’s metallic body and 15.1 MP resolution but it’s likely to have an improved sensor and offer low-light sensitivity. The new Rebel would be of a smaller size than the existing Rebel T1i and would be capable of at least 720p30 video.

Watch out for Canon’s possible announcements at PMA Photography Expo on 20th February, 2010 for more.

A couple years ago, I moved from a simple point-and-shoot camera to a much more complex Nikon D80 DSLR. At the time, the D80 was one of the best cameras you could get. The thing I missed right away with the D80 compared to my old camera was the ability to shoot video, but at the time, no DSLRs were able to record video.

Today things are much different and there are several DSLR cameras on the market that can shoot video in HD resolutions, like the Nikon D90. Canon today announced a new entry-level EOS Rebel T1i DSLR camera that can record video in full 1080p resolution, though at only 20 fps.

To get full motion 30 fps you have to cut the resolution back to 720p. The camera stores images and video to SD and SDHC memory cards. Other features include a 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and ISO 100 to ISO 3200 speeds. The rear Live View LCD is a 3-inch high-resolution screen. The T1i will ship in early May at an affordable price (for a DSLR) of $799.99 for the body only. Throw in an EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS zoom kit lens and the price for the camera goes up to $899.99.

When camcorders first launched decades ago the image quality was bad, the cameras were huge, and lots of tapes were needed to record anything. Today camcorders are very small, image quality is now often HD, and tapes are mostly a thing of the past.

Canon introduced three new camcorders that all record to internal storage in full 1080p HD resolution. The camcorders are all in the VIXIA line and record in 24Mbps bit rate in AVCHD format. Canon says that 24Mbps is the highest bit rate that can be used in the AVCHD format and makes for more detailed and smoother video recordings.

The VIXIA HF11 records up to 12 hours of HD video to 32GB of internal flash storage and has a SDHC slot for additional memory when needed. The VIXIA HG20 can record up to 22 hours of video to a 60GB internal HDD and has a SDHC card slot. The final camcorder is the HG21 with 160GB of storage — recording up to 45 hours of video — and a SDHC card slot for expansion. The camcorders will be available in September with the HG11 selling for $1199, the HG21 for $1299 and the HG20 for $949.
