Happy New Year!

Screen Shot 2015-12-31 at 8.01.24 AM

I want to take a second to wish all of you a Happy New Year, full of happiness and good vibes. 2015 was a little weird for OhGizmo!, a little bit all over the place and lacking in direction. I know for a fact 2016 will be different. I have a lot of things planned for the site. A redesign is on the way. And some new editorial directions. I’ve been online for almost 11 years now, and the blogging landscape has changed tremendously since the early days. It’s never easy knowing which direction to take to remain relevant, and in 2016 I plan to try new things. I’m hoping something will stick.

I’m going to be light on the updates for the next few days. It’s New Year’s celebrations now, and then I’m going to CES, but won’t be able to work much from there. I’ll do my best to pre-write a bunch of articles to tide you over until January 10th, but there may be less than usual.

And yes, the “usual” number of articles is yet another thing I plan to change for 2016. You guys deserve more than what I’m outputting, and I’ll do my best to fix that.

In any case, once again, Happy New Year to everyone. There wouldn’t be an OhGizmo! without all of you.

Seeking Your Feedback

Hey guys, I want to ask you a question. We’ve been approached by our friends at Faveable, asking us if we’d like to feature an automotive column on OhGizmo. They own a separate car site, and are wanting to drive more readers there. The idea would be to come in 5 times a week and write a short article on here, similar to the Faveable column, with some links pointing back to them. I’m concerned that there will be too much syndicated content like this, but at the same time many of you might enjoy the extra content. So I want to leave it up to you all to decide. Do you want to see more automotive news, even if it’s not written by us?

We’re Launching A Store! (And Giving Stuff Away)

Screen Shot 2014-04-27 at 7.46.50 PM

Hey guys, I wanted to let you all know that we’ve partnered with StackSocial to give you guys an OhGizmo-branded store. That’s right, you can now not only find out about quirky and innovative gadgets on our front page daily, you can also jump straight to shopping for exclusive deals on trending gadgets, consumer tech, software, and e-learning every day. The store is right here!

We’re proud to partner up with Stack Social, who also work with some juggernauts like Gizmodo, The Verge, and Mashable. This way you guys know you’re in good hands and all your transactions are safe. And to get things started, we’re also having a giveaway! Read on for the deets on this entire venture.

Some of you may remember our Deal Of The Day column. While that’s over, I still feel like there was value there for many of you, and I’m hoping to set things up with a similar format. That means I’ll be writing about one deal daily, though I promise these will actually be exciting (unlike the previous ones). Have any of you seen their Mac Bundles?! You’re free to wait for the articles, or go and shop anytime! At the same time, I’m hoping to improve on the old format by asking for your feedback. I’ll regularly be quizzing you on what you want to see more of, what products interest you, and what I could we be doing to make this better for you.

Finally, as promised, there’s a giveaway. To get things started on the right foot, StackSocial and OhGizmo! are giving away a Doxie Go (a portable scanner), a SOUNDFREAQ Sound Step (a cool Bluetooth speaker dock), and an Ouya console (an open source gaming console). That’s a $400 value, and you can enter to win right here!. You’ll find all the details there, and it’s super easy to enter.

So that’s it, that’s the big news. Now’s as good a time as any to let the team know what you think. I’m going to try to be careful and not overwhelm you with too many deals, and we’ll try to fine tune the experience as we go, based on your feedback. But I do think this is going to add value to the site, and I feel like you guys will dig it. Let me know if I’m wrong!

Merry Merry Christmas, from all of us here at OhGizmo!

We’re taking a day off here, because well, why not? But tune in tomorrow for your regularly scheduled entertainment.

On A Personal Note, There’s This Restaurant I Want To Tell You All About

So this is completely outside of anything I’d ever put on this site. However I’d like to take a second to tell you guys about this restaurant I went to last weekend. It’s called Icone, and sits in prime real estate on St-Laurent blvd. It belongs to a friend, and if you’re ever in the Montreal area, you might want to stop by. The food is fantastic, the decor top notch and the ambiance just right. The food in particular was something else, with highlights featuring Seared Scallops with sea urchin and cauliflower risotto, mascarpone, arugula and aged balsamic, or a Roasted Lamb Shoulder that fell off the bone. Prices are decent for both the food and drinks. Definitely a thumbs up.

And that, my friends, concludes my public service announcement.

We’re Experiencing Technical Difficulties

Regular readers will notice the site doesn’t look normal at the moment. That’s because I had to activate the default WordPress theme until we figure out why our normal one is broken. I’ll have my tech guy look at things in the morning, but it’s 4am in the Eastern time zone, and things will look this way until at least 7am or 8am Pacific, when he wakes up (if he’s even home! Woe me if he isn’t!).

Not that I think any of you really cares what the site looks like, to be honest. But I figured I’d tell you anyway, in case you were wondering. It’s also the reason why there are barely any new posts up today. I’ve been trying to troubleshoot this for the last four hours. And I suck at this kind of stuff, so I’m out of my depth.

Patience, please.

Merry Christmas!

And Happy Holidays! And Happy Whatever Doesn’t Offend You! We’re taking a day off, here at OhGizmo!, but we’ll be back to our regular schedule on Wednesday. Until then, unwrap presents, drink wine, drink plenty of water the morning after, and enjoy the time with your loved ones. From all of us here at OhGizmo!, to all of you out there, wherever you are, remember: buying stuff you like is less important than spending time with those you love.

What Do Y’All Think Of A New Tagline: When Deciding On A New Editorial Focus Gets Complicated As Hell

Guys, this post is going to be a little lengthy, but I think super important. I’d like to seek your opinion on something really important. The gist of it is that I’m thinking (after 8 years, 13,000+ posts, and around 50 million views) of officially cementing a new editorial direction for the site. And with that, creating a new tagline. I’m thinking of “The Alternative Gadget Blog.” And I want to explain why.

I got the inspiration for the name OhGizmo! back in December of 2004 by looking at a OhHenry! bar. I know, right? Anyway, I knew I wanted to start a gadget blog, and was looking for a name and I thought “Hey, why not OhGizmo! Like, you know, OhHenry?! And let’s make the tagline Deliciously Geeky!! Because, well, chocolate is delicious and stuff…” So that was it. And for those of you who don’t know it yet, that’s been the tagline since then, although you could be forgiven for not having noticed since it’s buried in our heading only (check the browser bar at the top). But when you think about it, what does this tagline mean? What does it say about what this website is about? Come to think of it, what is this site about?

I think it’s a really important question to answer. It’s branding. It’s what people think of when they think of us, and it’s what they remember us by. “Oh yeah, dude, you should check out this site, OhGizmo, it’s about…” For the longest time, I’ve thought of the site as a gadget blog. In a sense, it is. But we’re not Engadget, Gizmodo, or even The Verge, nor could we be, and at this point even really… want to be. In the last few months we’ve been getting more and more interest in our quirkier articles. Some of our old timers would argue that this has been our strongpoint all along, but I’ve always tried to steer things back somewhat along a more mainstream consumer electronics angle out of a feeling that we should stick to “what we’re about.” My original angle, aside from the generic “gadget blog” was to focus on design and innovation… but still within the realm of mainstream consumer electronics. But it’s getting increasingly difficult to justify that position considering that, for one, we can’t compete with Engadget/Gizmodo/The Verge in terms of coverage, and two, there seems to be a thriving demand for just the kind of stuff that we’ve been covering more heavily of late.

So… what do you guys think? What do you think of the tagline “The Alternative Gadget Blog”? Or even “The Alternative Gadget Lifestyle”? And how do you feel about making this website specifically about that: the kind of gadgets that are, you know… off? Stuff that’s either weird, wtf-worthy, or really innovative in a way that isn’t just incremental, marginal. And how do you feel about including geek and Internet culture, and pretty much anything that I feel would interest our core audience? A place where the guys who are already reading everything about every single new fancy gadget can come to and get a taste of the… odder places of the tech universe, while at the same time keeping a finger in the CE pie when the product is really worthy of it. A place a little bit like BoingBoing but with less of the policital/activist stuff.

No decisions have been made, but I’d really like to hear what any of you has to say about this. If your comment doesn’t appear right away, the spam filter is working overtime and your comment will eventually be green flagged by me, so please don’t fret.

And, as always, thanks for reading!

Check Out My New Post About Home Automation That I Wrote For HP

So I didn’t get fired from my gig at HP. This makes me happy, but it also means that whenever I have an article up, I get to tell you guys about it. Those articles are longer, more researched and generally fun to read if you’re into the more intellectual sounding stuff. This time around it was about home automation, and to find out what I came up with, you just have to click below.
