OhGizmo! Review – AmpliTube iRig

By Chris Scott Barr

Not only am I an avid gamer, but I am also a musician. I have been playing guitar for about 13 years now, and it helps when I can keep all of my equipment in one place. That’s why when I got the chance to try out IK Multimedia’s AmpliTube iRig for the iPhone, I was really excited. The iRig is a device that allows you to connect your guitar to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and listen, record, and tune your guitar to all of your needs. After toying around with it for a bit, here are my thoughts on the product.

What You Get

In the box, you will get the actual iRig connector piece, and the instruction booklet. The device utilizes an application that you can download through the App Store called AmpliTube. The app comes in a free version, as well as an extended version that includes a ton of plug-ins. For this, I found all I needed was the free version.

The device has a sleek design, and it plugs right in to the i-device you’re using. There’s no issue with long cords or tangling thanks to the iRig’s design. I found this especially useful when I would move from place to place around the house, and when I was packing my gear up to travel.

XFX Releases Revolutionary War Pad

This post is syndicated with permission from GamerFront.net

When I’m gaming on my PC, I not only want to have the gear that will perform the best, but also that’s going to be comfortable. After all, it doesn’t matter how well you perform, if you’re uncomfortable the whole time, it will eventually catch up with you and drag you down. Well, that’s exactly the idea that XFX had when they designed the War Pad.

The War Pad is a unique mousepad that doesn’t just sit on your desk like others. Instead of sitting at the edge of your desk, it actually curls underneath and clips on. This design does two things. First, the fact that there is no harsh edge means that it is going to be more comfortable. Your wrist isn’t going to be sitting on a hard desk corner for hours on end, instead, the pad is rounded downward and provides a more comfortable surface. Second, the clip is going to make sure that the pad doesn’t move at all while you’re playing.

The pad measures roughly 17” by 14”, so as to provide a nice big surface for mousing. It also rolls up nicely for taking to your favorite LAN. You’re going to pay a bit extra for the convenience and comfort, as it will currently set you back $50 (regular price is $55). However, I think that the extra features are worth it.

Duke Nukem Forever Reviewed

By Chris Scott Barr

Duke Nukem Forever has been the punching bag of the gaming world for the last decade or so. With roughly 14 years in development, it’s not hard to figure out why. Last week the game actually hit store shelves, which is something many of us thought would never actually happen. But after more than a dozen years of waiting, is the game really worth it?

It’s almost difficult to judge a game that has been in production for as long as this one. The main reason is that with so much hype, and simply knowing that there have been so many years poured into one game that it must be a masterpiece. You’ll have to head over to GamerFront to catch the full review, but if you’re expecting a perfect game, the Duke won’t be delivering. However, if you’re looking to blow up aliens in the most crude and vulgar game that you’ve seen in a long time, well you’re going to be in luck.

OhGizmo! Review – Stem TimeCommand iPhone/iPad Dock

By Chris Scott Barr

Last time I counted, there were roughly a million iPhone/iPod docks on the market. Okay, so perhaps that’s something of an exaggeration, but sometimes it really does feel like there are that many. With such a variety, how can one be sure to pick out the best for them? Well, Stem has released a new dock called TimeCommand that they think you should consider.

First Look

The TimeCommand is a black cylinder that is almost exactly the width of the iPad. As you guessed, there is a good reason for this. Not only does this dock support your iPods and iPhones, but it has been designed to accommodate the much larger iPad.

On the dock you will find seven buttons. The larges is your snooze button, which also acts as play/pause if you’re listening to tunes. There are also buttons for two alarms, a set of brightness/volume buttons, and my favorite, the light button. When you plug in the TimeCommand, you’ll find that it has an outlet. If you plug a light into the extra outlet, you can control it with the button on the dock. This can be rather handy when used with a bedside lamp. There is also a decent sized digital clock on the face, and a pair of speakers built around the sides of the dock.

By Chris Scott Barr

Well, it’s Friday, and I promised to hand out mice to three lucky winners. Since I like to keep my promises, it’s time to announce who those people are. In accordance with the rules that I made up, I picked the three comments at random. I thought about playing favorites, but then I realized that I don’t actually know any of you, and just went with the ones my cat pointed to on the screen. (It is possible that she may be playing favorites, as I don’t know what she does on the computer when I’m not around.)

The three winners are Ivan Gustavo Flores Molina, Billy Kent, and lizmoney. Each of you will be receiving a Smartfish Whirl Mini mouse! Congratulations to these three, and for those that didn’t win, we’ll be announcing a new contest happening over at GamerFront.net a little later in the day, so stay tuned!

Tritton AX Pro Headset Reviewed

When you’re playing video games, you want to get sucked into the experience. Total immersion is the ultimate goal when you fire up your console or PC and start up your favorite game. There are many factors that go into the experience. Everything from gameplay, graphics, frame rate and audio all play their part in providing a good gaming experience. Naturally, this means that  you want to crank your speakers up so that you can hear every bullet fire and every shell hit the ground. But what if you have to worry about disturbing neighbors, roommates or family members? Naturally, you reach for your favorite headset.

Tritton has released their AX Pro headset, which promises to deliver excellent 5.1 surround sound from not only your PC, but your Xbox 360 and PS3 as well. Unlike most other headsets that use a standard stereo jack for input, Tritton has decided to take advantage of the optical ports found on most PCs and two of the three current-gen consoles. So will their cross-compatibility and true Dolby 5.1 sound stack up to the competition? Check out the full review over at GamerFront to find out.

OhGizmo! Review – iMicrophone

By Chris Scott Barr

The great thing about smartphones these days is that they can effectively eliminate the need to carry around a bunch of extra devices. Calculators, PDAs, MP3 players and even personal recorders are all obsolete when you have the latest technology. I personally use my iPhone for all of the above, and then some. I never thought that I had a need to record voice memos, but now that I have a phone that can do it, I use the feature quite often. The audio quality isn’t bad, but it’s not the best in the world. Thus, having an external microphone to attach could prove rather useful.

I’ve had a chance to take a look at the i-Microphone, which is a tiny mic designed specifically for Apple devices. If you own an iPhone, you’ll quickly find out that just plugging in an ordinary mic won’t work. This is because it uses the same jack for audio input and output. So how well does this little device perform?
