Intelligent Blinker is a Wearable Turn Signal for Cyclists

Intelligent Blinker

The dark is sometimes a cyclist’s worst enemy. Unlike cars, bikes don’t come equipped with lights and signals so other people on the road might misread the signals (or lack thereof) and, well, you know what happens next. As a response to this, PhD students from Electronics Laboratoryat EPFL have come up with the Intelligent Blinker, which is a solar-powered wristband that glows when the cyclist extends his hand to indicate that they’re about to make a turn.

The Intelligent Blinker is built with a microcontroller, a magnetometer, an accelerometer, and a compass. It comes with a solar panel and built-in battery, which can be charged via USB. Together, these elements might just save countless lives and prevent numerous accidents.

The Intelligent Blinker was recognized in the recently-concluded Texas Instruments Analog Design Contest.
