Flote Stand For Tablets Would Make Us Happy

By David Ponce

This product initially reads like one of those things only a really lazy person would get. “What, you can’t even hold your own darn tablet? What’s wrong with you?” But then you watch the video and realize that there’s tons of situations where you’d be well served by it. It’s called the Flote, and it “is a machined-metal floor stand designed to securely hold a wide variety of tablets like the iPad or e-readers like the Kindle in virtually any position so you can use them hands-free for prolonged periods of time.” Yeah, we realize it still sounds like something completely useless; put it on your lap, right? Well, watch the video, it’s pretty nifty. Sure, putting the reader on your lap is fine but…sad as this may sound, tilting your head downwards for a while can, yeah… hurt your neck.

Screw all that, it’s just awesome because it’s awesome not to have to hold stuff. Come on, people, since when do we need to justify this?

The price on the other hand? Well, it’s on Kickstarter right now and you can pre-order for, ahem, $245. Yeah… The project is about one third funded so who knows… maybe the Flote will see the light of day.

xPrintserver Gives You Trouble-free Wireless iDevice Printing

By David Ponce

Unloading a document off your iDevice and printed onto some dead tree sheets is easier said than done, especially in a corporate environment. Sure, there’s AirPrint, but there are tons of different printers in your office and they may or may not play well with the technology. That’s where xPrintserver comes in. It’s an iPhone sized device that plugs into your network and automatically discovers all the printers. Connect to it through your mobile device and print away. The xPrintserver comes preloaded with drivers for over 4,000 printers, including from brands like HP, Brother, Epson, Canon, Dell, Lexmark, and Xerox. Yes there are app that may do the same thing already for free, but remember this is for the office. And as such, you might be able to chalk the $150 price tag up to a legitimate business expense.

xPrintserver will ship in January 2012.

Have You Looked At Your “Other” Facebook Messages Lately?

By David Ponce

So this isn’t a new “feature” by Facebook but it’s recently been brought to my attention and I’m a little shocked. It appears that under Facebook’s “Messages” section on the left, there’s a sub-section called “Other”. How messages end up there instead of in your main message window I’m not sure… but what I do know is that as soon as I found out and went to look, I discovered a good half dozen, terribly important messages just sitting there unanswered. This is ridiculous. When I check for messages, I do it through the top navigation bar, by pressing on the icon sandwiched between the notifications and the friend requests. Pressing this brings you to your main message window and there’s no sign of the “other” sub-section unless you specifically look for it. At no point was I informed of this and had I not come across the source link today, these messages might have sat there for yet another eternity.

We realize that it’s become a spam folder, but there clearly are many false positives in there. Again, Facebook could have been a little more vocal on the specific changes they were making to the site, however well intentioned.

Any of you just now discovered important messages?

Surprise: X-Ray App That Lets You See Under Catalog Models’ Clothing Actually Boosts Sales

By David Ponce

It’s hard to think of a better way to showcase augmented reality technology than by making use of it to undress models. Case in point is the latest marketing push by outerwear retailer Moosejaw. Last month they released an iPhone app that works in conjunction with their print magazine. Get the mag, download the app, and point your camera at select pages on the magazine. While the boring old dead tree reality would show you the models fully clothed, they’d appear in their skivvies on screen. From the video below, the technology works quite well. What seems to work even better is its effect on the company’s bottom line as they’ve seen a 37% increase in sales from the same period in November last year. Other retailers have tried similar products before but Moosejaw seems to have seen the largest impact on sales. What’s more, Gary Wohlfeill, the company’s creative director, said that although they’re pleased with the increased ROI, their ultimate goal was to delight their subscriber base and build long term loyalty.

Nearly naked models will do that.

Call Of Duty MW3 Took 16 Days To Reach $1Billion

By David Ponce

While it might be unfair to compare apples to oranges and gaming franchises to Hollywood movies, that’s what the cool public relations’ companies are doing these days, so let’s roll with it. It took James Cameron’s Avatar 17 days to cross the $1billion milestone and now Activision’s one-upped the man by taking one day less with Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3. We are actually somewhat surprised as we recently reported that it took MW3 just 5 days to cross $775million. Sales tapered off rather quickly as it took another 11 days to add $225million. Still a very impressive figure and a sure sign that the franchise is nowhere near death. With next generation consoles undoubtedly in the making, get ready for many more years of this craziness.

The Click Keypad Watch Is Not A Calculator

By David Ponce

You can add the Click Keypad watch to the list of time-telling devices whose entire point is to make the business of telling time more (not less) difficult. There’s a certain charm in the process, at least in the mind of certain geeks that are attracted by it. We fall squarely in that group and that’s why we like this watch. Not only does it tell time awkwardly, it also looks like it should be a calculator, but it isn’t. Time is displayed by a sequential blinking of the corresponding LEDs, which are activated after pressing any 0-9 number. The date is similarly triggered and read by pressing “#”.

The Click Keypad comes in 5 colors and costs $90. They ship worldwide.

Video and link after the jump.
