The Future Is Now: This Is A Levitating Lamp

By David Ponce

You know it’s the future when America has a black president, Oprah isn’t on anymore and stuff is levitating all over the place. This lamp is yet another example. Look closely at the picture above (or play the video below) and you’ll notice the upper section of this lamp isn’t attached to anything. It’s called Silhouette #1 and will cost you 1,000 Euros. For that price you get a lot of levitation but not that much lighting, as the LED based lamp puts out a puny 300lux.

Well actually, we’re not really sure if 300 lux is a lot of not. We just assumed it isn’t. Any engineers in the crowd?

Making The Bluetooth Headset Cool Again With The Angle

By David Ponce

The thing about Bluetooth headsets is that they require you to spend an extra three or four seconds putting them on. And they’re yet another item to carry around in your pockets or in the car. The Angle Bluetooth headset pictured here solves those two admittedly non-problems. Designed by Antoinne Coubronne, Michael Harboun and Thomas Chabrier in the context of a design competition at Orange (the telco), The Angle is a detachable part of a specially made case that places the headset in the exact spot it needs to be so that when you simply lower your hand, a hook keeps it attached to your ear. Describing the process doesn’t do its elegance justice; you have to watch the video below. It’s all so natural and effortless, the way that you bring the phone up to your ear, lower it back down and keep talking.

Sadly this seems to be nothing more than a concept at the moment, although Orange’s involvement gives hope that it can one day see the light of day.

MyRingGuard Can Save You In Case Of Emergency

By David Ponce

This is a great idea. The MyRingGuard is a prototype silicone and plastic ring that sends a distress text message along with your exact GPS location to a pre-determined set of people in case of emergency. They can then decide to either come to you, call 911 for you or walk around their apartment while flailing their arms, in agony over how to best come to your help. Say you’re out running late at night and trip and injure yourself. Or you fear for your safety for whatever reason. Instead of reaching for your phone just press your thumb to your index finger and the ring will communicate through Bluetooth and send out those distress signals. Think of it as a sophisticated panic button.

Currently the MyRingGuard is in the crowdfunding phase, not on your usual Kickstarter but on another social funding site. For $39 you can get a ring, though you’re free to contribute more to attain the stated $30,000 goal. However it appears to only work with Android powered phones at the moment.

Check Out These Car Horns

By David Ponce

This is super old stuff but came across it recently. It’s a great way to get yourself some hate, let me tell you. See, if the most unusual car horn you ever heard was that annoying “La Cucaracha” that’s been around for 100 years, why not try a train horn? Warning: this is only for those wanting to scare the sh** out of friends, neighbors and loved ones! You can find smaller train horns for around $50 up to this bad daddy for around $400. Let’s face it, the only point of a horn is to express your road rage in a more constructive manner than punching someone in the face, and to make the guy in front of you as irritated as you are. This will do the trick. If you are not mechanically inclined, you would have to also pay a mechanic to install it for you, so add that to the total cost of getting your rocks off. Even if this isn’t for you, check out the video of the results of this gizmo. The fun starts at :38 and gives you a solid 3 minutes of laughter.
