Off-Topic: My Good Friend Has Cancer

I just wanted to take two seconds to let you guys know that a former classmate and great friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with brain cancer. She is 29 I believe. She is a geek extraordinaire, currently in the process of obtaining her PhD in (get this) astrophysics at the University of South Carolina. She is also working on a novel about time travel. She has a Grade III Astrocytoma (maybe even Grade II if she’s lucky…) Her name is Leila Katarina Mizouni and she’s keeping a great blog about here experience: here. Writing was always her passion, even if she chose to study the stars.

We became close friends over physics problems back in those college days and while I haven’t seen her in 10 years, I always considered her one of my closest friends. It would mean a lot to me if you gave that blog a quick look. And if your heart desires, donate to her off-insurance fund.

My apologies if any of you feel this is not the place for this sort of stuff. But cancer at any age, let alone 29 is ridiculous. Drawing attention to her writing is the least I can do for her.

Geez, that’s terrible. She’s a wonderful writer, though, and I’ll be first in line to buy her book.

I could not have put it better myself!  We love Leila, she was my attendant at my wedding and like you – if I don’t see her for another 9 years, she’ll still be one of my closest friends at the close of that decade.  Thanks for sharing!!

My younger brother was also diagnosed with brain cancer (stage 3) a couple of months ago. He’s only 33, has 3 wonderful little kids, and his wife is pregnant with number 4 right now. He already had his surgery and they removed part of the tumor (tennis ball sized), because it was too large to remove it all (the entire front of his right lobe and part of his left), but they at least reduced the pressure on his brain. He just started his radiation and is determined to fight this for as long as he can.

We’ll keep your friend in our thoughts.
