Next week kicks off one of the biggest yearly events in gaming, E3. If you’re still not sure where to go for the latest news and coverage straight from the show floor, you should definitely head over to GamerFront.net. Not only will they be bringing you up-to-the-minute coverage, but they’re also running a contest to win some great NZXT Swag.
Up for grabs is an NZXT Prize Pack, which includes a Phantom, Sentry LXE and Bunker. With these prizes, you’ll have one of the best-looking gaming rigs on the block. All you need to do is head over to GamerFront and comment on any of their E3 articles, and you’re automatically entered for a chance to win. The more you comment, the better your chances. Good luck!
Currently under construction at a home in Palm Beach, Florida, this Pirates themed theater was commissioned by Elite Home Theater Seating with a building and design cost of about $2.5 million. While it’s not officially licensed by Disney or anything, it’s pretty obvious the design aesthetics were inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and not Cutthroat Island. So what does that much money get you? Well everything from an over-the-top entrance complete with ticket booth and a fully-dressed tavern in the lobby that overlooks the pirate ship deck screening room. Too bad it wasn’t completed before the less than stellar 4th Pirates outing though.
Just because you’re at a wedding or other fancy shindig doesn’t mean emergencies aren’t going to pop-up. So if you find yourself at an event where a Gerber hanging off your belt isn’t considered proper attire, these Exuvius Multi Tool Collar Stays will most certainly be an acceptable alternative. First and foremost they’ll prevent your shirt collar from popping up, but since they’re made from 100% titanium they’re also strong enough to be used as a screwdriver, bottle opener, thread cutter/wire stripper and in a prison situation, an effective shiv. Titanium usually costs a pretty penny, but because they’re so thin a set of 2 collar stays will cost you just $30, and if you think you’ll need backups, a set of 4 is a better deal at $50.
Well, it’s Friday, and I promised to hand out mice to three lucky winners. Since I like to keep my promises, it’s time to announce who those people are. In accordance with the rules that I made up, I picked the three comments at random. I thought about playing favorites, but then I realized that I don’t actually know any of you, and just went with the ones my cat pointed to on the screen. (It is possible that she may be playing favorites, as I don’t know what she does on the computer when I’m not around.)
The three winners are Ivan Gustavo Flores Molina, Billy Kent, and lizmoney. Each of you will be receiving a Smartfish Whirl Mini mouse! Congratulations to these three, and for those that didn’t win, we’ll be announcing a new contest happening over at GamerFront.net a little later in the day, so stay tuned!
Novelty items and sharp kitchen knives probably shouldn’t go hand in hand, but we can’t help but be enamored by this clever sharpener that’s designed to look like you’re about to saw a woman in half. The magic trick might be old hat and pretty uninspired when compared to today’s magicians and their ‘mind-freaking’ illusions, but anyone with even a passing knowledge of Harry Houdini and magicians of yesteryear should appreciate its novelty. And if you’re wondering how the knife goes from dull to sharp after being dragged through the device, I’m afraid the explanation is just good old fashioned magic. (And possibly a ceramic sharpening stone.) $11.95 available from the NeatoShop.
No matter what the temperature is outside, I think leaving pets unattended in a parked vehicle is a stupid idea. Denice Pruett, who works for a veterinarian in New Mexico, feels the same way. After seeing and hearing countless stories of pets who succumbed to hyperthermia or heatstroke while left in a locked vehicle, she came up with the ‘Too Hot For Spot?’ decal which lets you know just how hot or cold your vehicle really gets inside. It sticks to the inside of a car window like your standard novelty static cling decal, but includes a working thermometer needle showing you the temperature inside.
Besides letting owners know if it’s ‘safe’ to leave their animals locked inside (again, why even risk it?) the ‘Too Hot For Spot?’ thermometer also educates other people passing by as to how warm a locked and sealed car can get on a sunny day. $12.90 including shipping.
Perhaps as important as the hardware powering your computer is the monitor that you look at while working or gaming or wasting time being productive. And while prices for LCDs have dropped sharply over the last few months, the true behemoths are still costly. Behemoths like this UltraSharp monitor from Dell, which starts to blur the line between computer monitor and television (not so long ago a 27-inch CRT was a good purchase) usually sell for $1,499. But not with this LogicBuy deal, where you get 25% off, or $375.
The UltraSharp U3011 is not only massively large, it happens to be impressively spec’d out. It has a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution which keeps things dense enough, along with a 7ms grey-to-grey response time and a 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. At 370 nits, the unit will be bright enough for even the blindest of you. Perhaps more importantly, there’s a bevy of connections available: 2x DVI, 2x HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA and component. It even walked away with a Cnet Editor’s Choice pick after a glowing review.
The 25% rebate will be on until June 9th or the 1,000 first uses.
We all know that Apple, or at least those at the reigns, like to keep things as minimal as possible when it comes to buttons. It makes for a lovely design aesthetic, but can also lead to inconveniences at times. Like with the iPhone’s built-in camera, which requires you to touch the screen to take a photo. Having a physical shutter button would be very useful at times (like when taking self-shots) so the people behind the MoviePeg accessory have now come up with the Red Pop.
In essence it’s a camera grip accessory that can be connected to the bottom of the iPhone making it easier to hold when taking photos, but more importantly, it also adds a physical shutter button. Given how the iPhone camera’s focusing works I unfortunately don’t think they could implement the half-press to focus functionality like with most dedicated cameras, but I can certainly see the advantages to having something like this. Particularly if you’re hooked on camera apps like Hipstamatic or Instagram. If and when it’s available, depending on whether they reach their Kickstarter funding goals, the Red Pop will work with a free accompanying camera app. But its creators hope to add compatibility with existing camera apps too allowing iPhone photography enthusiasts to use it with their app of choice.
We certainly love us some over-the-top LEGO creations, and even though the Jawa Sandcrawler certainly isn’t the most exciting vehicle in the Star Wars universe, the attention to detail Marshal Banana has put into his LEGO model has us lusting over his creation. Built from 10,000+ pieces over 9 months, Marshal’s Sandcrawler could almost pass as a movie model, since it comes complete with a working crane, a fully completed interior with a moving conveyor belt and working treads allowing it to be driven remotely. Check out his Flickr gallery for some equally impressive photos of his creation. And weep when you look over at the rainbow colored monstrosity of a house your meager LEGO skills let you construct.
