iPoint Evolution Pencil Sharpener Automatically Stops When Your Pencil Is Sharp

iPoint Evolution Pencil Sharpener (Images courtesy Westcott)
By Andrew Liszewski

There’s something oddly satisfying about grinding a pencil down to a nub with an electric sharpener, but that’s not how you’ll be spending your first day at a new job if they assign you the iPoint Evolution from Westcott. I’m not really sure how it warrants the ‘i’ in front of the ‘Point’, but I do know that it’s smart enough to stop grinding when your pencil has the perfect point. So not only does it conserve battery life, but it prolongs the life of your pencil. It’s also got a set of “Titanium Bonded™ carbon steel blades” that are guaranteed to stay sharp longer, and is available from Solutions for $17.95.

TRON: Legacy Light Cycle USB Flash Drives

By Andrew Liszewski

Given the film is just around the corner I would have said it’s about time for the TRON: Legacy marketing push to go into full effect, but it seems that ship sailed months and months ago. Somehow though I’m not already sick of the film before even seeing it, and I’ve even been impressed by the some of the TRON: Legacy tie-ins that have already been released.

Now they’re no where near as cool as the glowing Adidas’s TRON: Legacy sneakers, but I wouldn’t mind a set of these light cycle USB flash drives. They come in both a 4GB Sam Flynn and 8GB Kevin Flynn variety, and of course feature glowing accent lighting when connected to your PC. They’re both currently available from Toys “R” Us for $24.99 and $34.99 respectively.

Decorate Your Tree With Scientists!

By Chris Scott Barr

The holidays are a special time of year, but for some people it doesn’t necessarily hold the same religious meaning. This is certainly not the place to preach about what to believe about this or that, but instead, I thought I’d share something for you science lovers out there. Here we have the Heroes Of Science: Non-Denominational Festive Ornaments. Yes, that is quite a mouthful.

So what exactly are these ornaments, you say? Why they are laser-engraved wooden ornaments. And if using lasers to create them wasn’t geeky enough for you, they depict one of twenty different important science figures. Each one measures roughly 3 3/4 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide and comes with 16 inches of satin ribbon in your choice of three colors. Hit the jump for a list of scientists you can choose from.

Concerto Table

By Andrew Liszewski

A grand piano can add a touch of class to any home. But what if you don’t know how to play, or live in a not-so-sprawling apartment? You might be impressing your friends, but that’s a lot of floor space to give up just to look cultured. Thankfully there are designers hard at work solving problems just like these, and this time around the fruits of their labors have resulted in the Concerto Table.

It might look like a baby grand piano, but the Concerto is actually a dining room table that comes complete with a storage compartment in the middle for stashing things when it’s time to eat, a pull-out drawer for storing cutlery and of course an iPod dock for providing a suitable soundtrack to breakfast, lunch and dinner. It looks like it can comfortably seat up to 7 people so it’s not all form over function, and it can be yours in either a bright white or black high gloss enamel finish for a mere $14,000.

Carbon Fiber PURISME PIPE (Image courtesy PURISME)
By Andrew Liszewski

If you’re a tenured professor who likes to live life in the fast lane, that traditional wood pipe you’ve been smoking probably doesn’t suit your style. But instead of giving up the habit, why not just upgrade your hardware? This drool-worthy carbon fiber alternative from PURISME is almost cool enough to make me want to take up smoking.

The pipe is actually made from a combination of straight grain bruyère wood and carbon fiber, but that latter ingredient is wrapped around the outside giving it that million dollar sports car finish. As a result the pipe weighs just 75g, and it’s also got a unique inverted design so you can set it down anywhere without it tipping over. As always looking cool doesn’t come cheap, but if you’ve got ~$2,500 (€1,890), a desire to take a few years off your life and the patience to wait 5 weeks, you can order one directly from PURISME.

Pajama Warming Pouch

By Andrew Liszewski

I’m constantly amazed at Hammacher Schlemmer’s ability to find things I never knew I needed. For instance, did you know that the same amazing technology that can warm your towels can also be applied to one’s pajamas? Using a heating element that can warm up to 118º F while only drawing just 50 watts, this fleece covered pouch with its “thermal satin interior” is able to toast your pajamas in just 10 minutes! It of course can also be used to heat up other garments like gloves or scarves, and I like that Hammacher’s website points out that it can be folded up for easy travel, because I assume once you try an evening with warmed pajamas, you’ll never be able to live without that luxury ever again. $39.95.

F-Stop Watch – Is It A Quarter Past 2.8 Already?

F-Stop Watch (Image courtesy UncommonGoods)
By Andrew Liszewski

Last week it was the lens ring bracelets and this week we bring you another photography-themed wrist adornment with this F-Stop watch. It doesn’t do anything particularly clever, besides sporting an aperture inspired face with the regular 1-12 hours replaced with just f-stop increments. Kind of like an inside joke that more people know about now with the advent of consumer-friendly DSLRs. $36 available from Uncommon Goods, though it’s currently out of stock.

Glee Themed Magic 8 Ball

Glee Themed Magic 8 Ball (Image courtesy Fox Shop)
By Andrew Liszewski

While Glee has gotten a bit more dramatic this season, I don’t think anyone should ever take it too seriously. At least not seriously enough to listen to advice from a talking/singing over-sized billiard ball. Now I’ve seen ‘themed’ versions of the Magic 8 Ball before, but never to the extent that something like Monopoly takes it, but maybe this is the beginning of a trend? This Glee themed prognosticator provides 20 different predictions that are either spoken or sung, so if you know someone who likes to hear short, edited, highly compressed clips from the show, your gift hunt is already over. $12.95 available from the Fox online store.
