Let me remind you that the Core i7 is a powerful quad-core CPU and that systems that include it are usually not that inexpensive. So when you’re looking at this E5510 Latitude from Dell, keep in mind that not only can you configure it with a Core i7 processor, but that if you do so at a price above $1,199 (in LogicBuy’s suggested config the total reaches $1,203), you will get a 35% coupon that takes that price all the way down to $781.95. That’s $421 in savings. For that price, you get “2GB DDR3 ram, a 15.6″ Anti-glare LED LCD, a 160GB Hard Drive, 802.11n WiFi, a 6-cell battery and Windows Vista”.
Last week we were excited to tell you that you would soon be able to ditch your Netflix disc when streaming movies on your PS3. Yesterday, you were finally able to do that. What we didn’t expect was to find that Nintendo’s console was getting the same treatment. That’s right, pop out that red disc and throw it at someone, because you’re not going to need it anymore.
It seems that the exclusive deal inked by Microsoft back in 2008 has finally expired. The deal stated that Netflix wasn’t allowed to have installable apps on any other gaming console. Thus, they worked around it by shipping out special discs. Since you weren’t technically installing anything to the consoles themselves, Netflix you were still able to stream content without Microsoft’s deal being breached. Sneaky Neflix, very sneaky.
A couple of years ago I was taken aback that someone was selling a yo-yo for $460. It was nice and all, but $460? Well that seems like a steal now since this model, the Nostalgia, is hand-made by world champion yo-yo builder Shinobu Konmoto and sells for somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000, or ¥400,000.
Don’t get too excited when you’ve finally scrimped and saved enough to order one though, because they take 6 months to complete! And, just like buying an expensive DSLR doesn’t guarantee you Ansel Adams quality photos, don’t expect to be the next Tom Smothers when this thing finally arrives. In fact I’d use those 6 months of waiting to get really, really good at yo-yo-ing, since you probably don’t want to risk any incidents while using this one.
While not as pocket-friendly as some of their other models, AAXA Technologies’ new M1 Ultimate Micro Projector is still pretty damn small, particularly considering its capabilities and price point. We’ve reviewed a couple of the company’s pico projectors in the past, and while the P1 featured a usable 12 lumens of brightness, the L1 boosted that to 20 lumens which produced very nice results in a suitably dark room. However, if you’re willing to accept a bit of a compromise when it comes to extreme portability, the M1 Ultimate Micro’s 75 lumens should produce some really nice results, even with the lights on.
The M1 Ultimate Micro is still ridiculously small, don’t get us wrong, it just won’t be squeezing into your shirt pocket. That’s ok though since the 75 lumens is also accompanied by an 800×600 resolution, 1GB of on-board memory and a built-in SD card reader, a new aluminum housing with touchpad controls and an included tripod making it easy to prop-up and aim. It’s also currently available for just $299, which makes it a tempting alternative to larger briefcase sized models for those who travel.
James-Michael Gregory Harlan, I tip my hat to you sir. It’s not uncommon to see elaborate model railroad displays and setups, but let’s face it, shunting trains and boxcars isn’t really that fun, no matter how impressive your miniature surroundings are. But slot cars? Well even a simple figure 8 track on a plywood and sawhorse table in an unfinished basement is more entertaining than model trains, but thankfully people like James-Michael dream bigger than that.
It’s not that surprising to hear that he works as an exhibit designer since his White Lake Formula One Ring looks like it belongs in a museum or a science center as part of an ‘awesome things you wish you had at home’ exhibit. The custom track design was actually routed on a CNC machine and the 1/32 scale course is 145 feet long with 19 Formula1 worthy turns. And with a setup like this at home, I’m pretty sure James-Michael doesn’t give a crap about how often Gran Turismo 5 has been delayed.
It’s hard to complain about the iPad’s battery life. It isn’t infinite, but it will easily last for even the longest of intercontinental flights and then some. However, that’s not stopping 3rd party accessory makers from creating external battery packs, even though I can’t imagine the demand is as great as it is for the iPhone. SolidMicro is the latest to create a case/battery combo that features a hefty 6,000mAh battery that provides up to 2.4X the iPad’s standard battery life. Pricing is still TBA it seems, but I’m pretty sure most users won’t even bother if it ends up in the $100+ ballpark, which is most likely.
As Top Gear(season 14, episode 5) once showed, there’s not a lot of great automotive art. The cars themselves can most definitely be pieces of art, but hanging one in the living room is only for those with too much money on their hands. However, I think these 3D track wall pieces strike a perfect balance between minimalist art and fanaticism.
Made from laminated birch and formica cut on a CNC machine, the pieces are simple enough to come off as abstract modern art when hanging on your wall, but won’t go unnoticed by real racing fans. The Linear Edge makes a huge selection of tracks just like these based on real world courses from MotoGP to Formula1 to even Nascar, though it does seem to pass on the boring ovals. They sell for either $199 or $219, presumably based on size, and custom orders can also be made, presumably with a higher price tag.
Like squash, the game of jai alai has players sending a ball towards a wall in an enclosed court. But while squash players use a stringed racket and a rubber ball, jai alai players use a scoop called a xistera to rocket a ball (or pelota) made of metal wire wrapped in goatskin up to speeds of 188mph. The game can actually be quite dangerous if you get hit, so it makes perfect sense that someone would apply the same concepts to snowball fights.
This xistera is made from durable ABS plastic and it’s apparently capable of launching a snowball up to 150 feet, which is pretty impressive even if it never reaches 188mph. The handle also features a built-in mold for crafting the perfect snowball, and a set of two is available from Hammacher Schlemmer for just $24.95. Goodbye cold and wet gloves, hello concussions.
