Tascam’s Adorable DP-008 8-Track Recorder

Tascam DP-008 8-Track Recorder (Image courtesy Tascam)
By Andrew Liszewski

Proving that you don’t necessarily need a multi-million dollar studio to record music, Tascam’s DP-008 is a pocket-stretching mini studio in its own right letting you record 2 tracks simultaneously while building up an 8 track mix. Each track has its own row of knobs for adjusting levels, pan, EQ and effects which send to a built-in stereo reverb processor with settings like hall, stage etc.

It also includes 2 XLR inputs with phantom power, 2 1/4″ line inputs, a built in stereo electret condenser mic for recording a performance wherever you are and the ability to capture CD-quality sound (44.1kHz/16-bit) to SDHC cards up to 32GB in size. And when you’re done, your creation can be mixed down to a dedicated stereo track and exported as an uncompressed WAV file. ~$230 from Amazon which seems to currently have the cheapest price.

DEMON UAV Is The First Jet To Fly Without Flaps

DEMON UAV (Images courtesy The Dailymail)
By Andrew Liszewski

A few weeks ago an experimental unmanned air vehicle called the DEMON, which was developed by BAE Systems working with 10 British universities, made aviation history by becoming the first plane to fly without the use of flaps. Now the 200lb aircraft pictured here with its 8-foot wingspan does have flaps as you can see, but those were switched off shortly after takeoff so it could fly using only its unique fluidic flight control system which uses jets of air along the trailing edge of the wing to change how the air flows over it. The results are the same as using flaps, which create higher pressure under the wings allowing aircraft to fly and bank left or right, without the added moving parts or maintenance.

Of course like the F-117 stealth fighter or the B2 bomber that came before it, the DEMON is highly reliant on advanced computer flight control systems to stay aloft, including a bank of sensors along the wing that constantly monitor and adjust the airflow keeping the craft from, well, crashing. And there’s still plenty of R&D and improvement to be done before the technologies demonstrated on the DEMON make their way onto manned aircraft, but in the long run it could definitely improve future aircraft design.

HAL 9000 MacBook Decal

HAL 9000 MacBook Decal (Image courtesy Etsy)
By Andrew Liszewski

Until about five minutes ago I was totally against the idea of putting any kind of decals on my laptop, or any gadget for that matter. Then I saw this HAL 9000 decal from Etsy seller ‘ExpendableDecals’ which probably looks pretty slick on a MacBook with the apple logo glowing, and completely changed my mind. Unfortunately though while it was once listed as being available for $15, the decal appears to be currently sold out.

Dear Every Single Electronics Manufacturer On The Planet, Please Adopt This Line Block Cable Design

Line Block Cable Concept (Images courtesy Yanko Design)
By Andrew Liszewski

If you share my obsession with neat and tidy cables and wiring then there’s a good chance you’re also going to wish that designers Lee Ji Eun, Yi-Seo Hyeon, Heo-Hyeoksu and Jeong Minhui have the funding (and lobbying power) to get all the electronics manufacturers of the world to adopt their brilliant cable design. The Line Block Cable concept kind of works like tongue and groove flooring, or even LEGO bricks for that matter, allowing you to attach and stack your cables together into a neat single trunk line without the need for zip ties or velcro straps to keep things in order. Now I’m sure there are some logistical issues to be worked out, as well as the need for manufacturers to settle on a standard design to make it truly useful, but a boy can dream can’t he?

Pac Man Alarm Clock – Wakeup-Wakeup-Wakeup-Wakeup-Wakeup-Wakeup

Pac Man Alarm Clock (Image courtesy Firebox.com)
By Andrew Liszewski

Since an alarm clock shaped like the iconic ‘ball’ from Pong doesn’t sound particularly exciting, it’s not surprising that someone has licensed Pac Man instead, bringing the famous dot-eating, ghost-hunting yellow protagonist to your nightstand. Powered by a couple of AAA batteries it’s your pretty basic alarm clock actually, but the buttons feature cherry, bell and ghost decals, and it plays several authentic Pac Man sound effects including the highly recognizable start-up ditty and the ominous wakka-wakka-wakka. ~$24 available from Firebox.com.

Deal Of The Day: Get 1 Month Free Netflix Trial (Instead Of 2 Weeks)

By David Ponce

They say it tastes better when it’s free. Those of you who decide to take this one month trial of Netflix will have to tell me; while it just launched here in Canada, the service came to us so crippled from lack of content that it’s not even worth trying it out, no matter how free. Y’all down below have it good, and with today’s coupon those of you who’ve not taken the Netflix plunge will have an extra 2 weeks to ponder your decision.

Oh and if you haven’t heard by now, Blockbuster recently filed for bankruptcy. Netflix & co. are largely responsible for this and are reshaping the way content is consumed. Video rental stores are slowly going the way of the dodo… So if you haven’t yet embraced Netflix and streamed content, perhaps you should consider it.

Hoops Freek Basketball Control Stick Nubbins

By Andrew Liszewski

Will these basketball-themed textured rubber add-ons for your Xbox 360 or Playstation controller actually improve your performance in basketball games? Probably not. Will they make your controllers look more orange? Absolutely. They also just ‘clip-on’ to your controller’s sticks instead of using an adhesive so they’re not permanent, and they’re available for pre-order from the KontrolFreek website for just $9.99.

Transcend Goggles Are First To Feature Integrated GPS

By Chris Scott Barr

Having a GPS is great when you’re visiting a new city. As there’s nothing quite like getting lost and having to stop in a seedy part of town and ask directions. However, if you’re somewhere that has no people to ask for directions, such technology is invaluable. That’s what makes these Transcend goggles so awesome.

The goggles feature a built in HUD which gives you information such as latitude/longitude, altitude, speed traveled, current temperature, time and more. The best part is that when you get back home, you can plug them into your computer and download the GPS information. The included software then overlays your route with Google Maps so you can see exactly where you’ve been. The spiffy goggles will set you back either $400 or $500 (depending on whether you want polarized lenses or not) and can be preordered now.
