BoilBuoy Lets You Know When Your Water Is Boiling

By Chris Scott Barr

Cooking isn’t exactly my area of expertise. If it involves more than a single pan to prepare, I’m probably not going to bother with it. Some days I even manage to mess up the simple act of boiling water. Not because it’s a difficult task, mind you. I just tend to wander off and forget about the water until half of it has boiled away. I’d stand there and watch it, but it’s so boring, and I have better things to do with my time than watch water boil. Apparently I need one of these BoilBuoys.

When you put a tea kettle on the stove, it whistles when the water boils. This little thing is based on the same idea. When the water boils, a chime rings out. There’s really not much else to it. The BoilBuoy has a weighted bottom to make it stay upright and is made from food- and heat-safe materials. For $10, I’ll probably buy one.

Scosche FlipPort-Friendly Bluetooth freedomMIC

By Andrew Liszewski

A couple of days ago Flip announced updated versions of their camcorders that include a new feature called the FlipPort. It’s a proprietary connector now found on the bottom of the Flip UltraHD, and eventually all of the Flip camcorders, that provides a way for accessories to ‘plug in’ to the camera. Thankfully instead of keeping it a secret from everyone, Cisco made sure that certain third-party accessory makers were aware of the new addition before it was announced.

So over the past few days we’ve already seen a handful of FlipPort accessories revealed, like the new freedomMIC from Scosche that immediately improves the Flip which has only ever been able to use its own built-in mic for recording audio. Primarily designed for recording audio during an interview the freedomMIC is composed of a receiver that attaches to the FlipPort and a wireless “high performance” lavaliere-style condenser mic complete with DSP noise cancellation. It uses Bluetooth for a pretty decent range of up to 100 feet, and since the mic and receiver both have their own rechargeable lithium ion batteries good for about 4 hours, they won’t drain the Flip. (Does the FlipPort even provide power? I wonder…) Available mid to late December for $99.99.

‘Awareness! The Headphone App’ Lets You Hear What’s Going On Around You While Listening To Music

Awareness! The Headphone App (Image courtesy essency)
By Andrew Liszewski

We all know you shouldn’t ride a bike while wearing earbuds since they block out ambient noises and tend to make you oblivious to what’s going on around you. But thanks to a relatively cheap app you won’t have to go out and buy a special pair of headphones if you like listening to your music while riding, and also staying alive. Awareness! The Headphone App might have a clunky name, but it cleverly uses the microphone either on the iPhone or the iPod Touch (presumably via the mic-equipped earbuds) to let you hear what’s going on in addition to your music.

I particularly like that it doesn’t just create a mix of surrounding noises and your music all the time, but actively listens for any sounds that exceed the level of regular background noise, tuning them in as necessary. So you might not hear the dull roar of passing cars, but you’ll definitely hear an angry motorist honking. It does require you to occasionally calibrate what ‘regular background noise’ is, and you won’t be able to use a case that blocks the iPhone’s built-in mic, but for just $4.99 it’s a minimal compromise solution to make your ride a little safer.

Keyport Still Alive And Well – Teases A New Flash Drive Accessory

Keyport USB Flash Drive (Images courtesy Keyport)
By Andrew Liszewski

Longtime readers will already be familiar with the saga behind the Keyport, so it’s nice to see that not only is the company still going strong, but they’re also expanding the usefulness of their device. While it hasn’t officially been announced as being available for sale just yet, a new 4GB USB flash drive ‘blade’ that turns one of the Keyport’s slides into a handy bit of extra storage has been teased on the company’s website. Now personally I’d be a little hesitant to let the Keyport hang off the back of my computer like pictured here, but when used with a USB extension cord I think it’s a clever idea.

I Would Like These Letout Outlets Now Please

Letout Outlets (Images courtesy Damjan Stanković)
By Andrew Liszewski

The concept dates back to January of 2009 so it’s definitely not new, but the Letout Outlet, designed by Damjan Stanković, is new to me. Of course given it’s almost two years old now makes me a little discouraged since we’ll probably never see something like this go into production, even though the idea is genius. Basically it’s your standard single wall outlet that pops-out to become five outlets instead. No need for power bars, splitters or whatever crap currently sits piled up below the outlets in your home.

Seagate Makes Claims To The Industry’s First 1.5TB Portable Drive

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-Portable External Drive (Image courtesy Seagate)By Andrew Liszewski

It’s hard to get excited about hard drives since they’re inevitably going to get bigger and faster and cheaper. I mean if someone announced a 50TB flash drive tomorrow I’d probably get a little giddy, but odds are that’s not going to happen. So instead I’m going to give a shout out to Seagate and their latest and greatest FreeAgent GoFlex drive.

The black monolith will happily gobble up 1.5TB of your music, ebooks, photos and movies and since it ships with USB 3.0 capabilities you won’t be spending hours on end backing up files over USB 2.0. Assuming of course your PC is already on the USB 3.0 bandwagon. The drive also comes with a Superspeed USB 3.0 cable which will still work with USB 2.0 ports if you haven’t upgraded yet, and will also play nice with all of Seagate’s ‘GoFlex Storage System’ accessories like network adapters and media players. Available now, in the US at least, for $249.99.

PLUGO Circular Extension Cord

By Andrew Liszewski

The benefits of a circular extension cord are almost immediately apparent when you see it, and it makes you wonder why no one has thought of it before. There’s the obvious advantage when it comes to winding and storing the cable, which in and of itself makes it a must-have desk-cessory for my needs. But the fact that the outlets are located around its circumference, allowing it to easily handle the largest of wall warts without crowding, should appeal to a lot of people. It’s even dead-easy to hang wherever you might need it, and appears to come in a small assortment of bright, yet subdued, colors.

I even like the shrink-wrapped packaging which allows shoppers to examine the PLUGO without getting their dirty hands all over it. Available from monos for just over $40 (¥3,500).

Needle Table Lamp

By Andrew Liszewski

Capitalizing on the knitting trend that’s sweeping the nation this Needle Table Lamp, created by British design firm Vitamin, features a couple of adjustable aluminum needles that look like they were just pulled out of your mother’s craft basket. The power cord, with its fabric sheath, is wrapped around the point where the needles intersect adding to the illusion that they’re in the process of creating a scarf or a sweater, and the base features a couple of extra holes presumably for adjusting the angle of the LEDs. The lamp will be available in blue, orange, green and red, though when and for how much is unknown.
