For some reason I thought the ‘bed of nails’ idea only existed as a science center demonstration, but I guess there are people who believe that lying down on a bed of pressure points can be beneficial. Now you’ll probably want to avoid using it for yoga, but if a bed of nails is what you’re after this mat is covered with 230 little circular plastic tees which each include 28 ‘nails’ for a grand total of 6,440 pressure points. The benefits of laying on this mat supposedly include improved circulation, decreased muscle tension, improved digestion, increased endorphins and eligibility for circus side-show work. It’s available in pink or green for ~$61 and there’s even an optional pillow for an extra ~$31.

Shown at IFA, a Chinese company called Magic Bulb has created an LED bulb that not only uses just 4 watts of power to produce the equivalent amount of light as a 50W bulb, but it also features a built-in rechargeable battery that will keep the light running for an additional 3 hours should the power go out. And if the power outage is the result of an emergency requiring you to ‘escape’ your home or office, the bulb can be unscrewed and the neck extended to create a handheld flashlight. If and when the bulb is available in your part of the world it’s expected to sell for somewhere between $30-40, and it will be rated with a lifespan of around 20,000 hours.

Over the past couple of weeks I have had the pleasure of testing out the new X-Tatic Digital Headset by Sharkoon. This is a gaming headset that provides full Dolby 5.1 surround sound straight from your PS3 or Xbox 360 console right to your hungry little ear holes. I rather liked the headset despite its large size and immense amount of wiring that comes with it. So to kick off the review, let’s start talking about hardware.
The X-Tatic Digital Headset puts out 5.1 surround sound from 8 speakers (4 in each earpiece). It comes accompanied by an amp box, which is self-illuminated for multi-channel volume control. It has a digital, in-line volume control, and comes with a detachable microphone with QuickOn connection. The headset is quite large, and the 360 cm cable length is tipping the charts as well.
The whole rig plugs into your console itself, so that all of the sound is funneled straight to your ears. Just as an FYI, though, the headset is compatible with your PC, DVD player, or any other HiFi device you may have. The headset is built to deliver perfect high-quality sound to players, and is geared toward providing the most realistic gaming experience.

Mr. Potato Head has been around since the early 1950′s, entertaining millions of children with his interchangeable parts. But what if he hadn’t been created in the 50′s, and instead in the alternate universe of the Steampunk world? One crafty artist spent some time thinking on this very topic, and ended up with Sir Spudnik.
This bizarre specimen is a real Mr. Potato head base that has been covered in metallic and brass-like parts. Artist Sarita Maria felt the need to take things a couple of steps further by creating a mock wanted poster, and a very DaVinci-like blueprint for the toy. The best part is that she detailed the entire process over on her Instructables page.

Those of you obsessed with keeping your gear looking as good as it did the day it came out of the box might want to move along. Nixon’s developed a new matte paint finish for several of its watches included in their Gunship Collection that’s designed to wear away with use over time, making them almost look like battleships that have been to war and back. Perfect for those who wear their battle scars with pride, terrible for those who obsess and lose sleep over the tiniest of scratches. The watches range in price from $190 up to $500 for the model pictured above, and are available now.

At this point it’s pretty obvious the iPhone is never going to get a physical keyboard, but there are plenty of Android-based alternatives for those who can’t stand tapping out a message on-screen. But if you’re an iPhone user who’s been keeping hope alive your dreams will soon be a reality, at least a third-party reality. Shown for the first time at IFA, NUU’s Mini Key is a protective case that not only solves the iPhone 4′s reception issues (which I’ve yet to experience) but also adds a flip-out QWERTY keyboard.
I’m assuming it connects to the iPhone’s dock connector, hence the extra bulk on the bottom of the case, and in addition to a keyboard it also includes a “Bluetooth v2.0 class 2 and HID profile compliant Broadcom chip” and a built-in rechargeable battery to power the keyboard’s backlight so as not to drain the iPhone’s. It also makes for a handy stand when you’re watching videos. $69, available sometime around Christmas.

I’m surprised at just how many ugly iPhone docks there are on the market. Have product designers even looked at the model of industrial design that is the iPhone when they’re creating their own products? Sometimes I wonder. But it turns out you can also go too far when it comes to designing a product that’s supposed to complement the iPhone
I’m not sure if this ceramic hand ‘Gimme Power’ cradle/dock thing is supposed to be a piece of art, or a Hallowe’en decoration waiting for your kids to give it a macabre painted finish. But I do know that Neiman Marcus is asking $180 for it, and it’s somehow already on back-order, meaning it’s enjoying some modicum of popularity.

It would take a lot for a building toy to supplant LEGO’s epic popularity and infinite flexibility, and that’s probably why smaller manufacturers have tended to create specialized sets that are unique compared to what LEGO offers. Think Construx, Ramagon, K’Nex etc. And while there’s no end of magnificent LEGO robotic creations online, it does require some level of creativity and imagination. So if you’re lacking both of those skills, these intriguing Bowei robotic building blocks seem to be an ‘easy’ shortcut to creating your own mecha masterpiece.

The pieces look a lot like the popular Stikfas figures found in toy stores these days, but have more of a techno feel, making them ideal for building robots and other mechanized creations. According to some user reviews on Meritline.com they’re not exactly ideal for children, and can be downright difficult to assemble thanks to complex instructions, but us older types might have just enough patience to pull one off.
